Think the girlfriend will mind what i brought home?

Has anyone heard of accuracy issues with Mossy 535's or 500's with the rifled deer barrel?
I was talking to a guy from Ohio last week & he has tried a bunch of different slugs through his and can't shoot well enough with it to take it hunting. The 1 year old Mossy is sitting in the closet while he uses his old 870.

I've been eyeing up a 2 barrel combo at a local store and am now concerned I might be barking up the wrong tree. I like the tang safety better than the 870's cross bolt design; but it would be nice to hit the target as well. Any info out there?

My friend (who also has the Mossy 500) was at the range with me about a few weeks ago, sighting in his slug barrel with a Red Dot scope mounted. After a few shots and a few adjustments, he was putting it on paper. Only problem was, he ran outta slugs and his shoulder was getting sore. lol But he did mention he took an 8 point buck last year with it, so the gun can't be that bad. From what i seen though, the accuracy didn't look all that bad. I'll let you know how my gun does with the slugs, then i'll know for sure.

PS, i really like that tang safety myself.

FYI you can also get tags at the Archer's Nook. Clothing too for that matter. Then you can head over to Gobles and pick up some shells.

Good luck!

Dave

Buddy of mine was telling me that Eli's Gun and Archery in Simcoe has a sale going on. (pay no taxes) so i'm wondering if i can get a better deal on clothes there or not. Either way i'm still gonna pop by the Archer's Nook to check out what they got.

My 835 24in ulti mag rifled slug barrel works extremely well. Its rifled and with sabots I was hitting well at 100m. Didn't try ant further but it was accurate.

Mossberg 500 with rifled barrels can be vary accurate up to 100 yards. I got mine dialed in for 50 yards (works well for my hunting area) and I'm 100% confident that sabot slug is going to hit the target.

My advice to you is, buy 20-30 rounds of 2 3/4" sabots (don't need 3" for deer) and hit the range. Then come back here and let us know how your shoulder feels.

hehe i can only imagine. I didn't come close to shooting 30 in a row, but ten 3" sabot slugs was just about enough for my poor shoulder. Here i thought i was "used" to it, considering i shoot a 30.06 on a regular basis.

Archer's Nook is definitely not the best place to buy clothing but not the worst either. TSC might have some stuff to get you by. If you really want deals you need to head State side and hit Gander Mountain, Dicks or Cabelas.

Actually i didn't think of checking the local TSC store, so thanks for the idea. I've also spoken to a couple of friends who also wouldn't mind going to the states for some gear, (helps save on fuel, etc.) but just waiting for everyones schedule to line up with one another.

So what is the overall concensus on this 3 barrel package?
Reliable? Accurate with all three barrels?
Anyone shoot the same gun for upland birds? If so, how is it?

Thanks.

And thanks Gylar for getting my interest up and possibly costing me more money... hahaha

hehe Anytime Pottsy! I'll have a full range report Thursday night posted for all to see.... :) (or try to....gotta be up first thing for my very first hunt!)

Gylar,

I stopped by TSC today and they only had a couple of insulated parkas, no light weight stuff.

Pottsy,

We've shot some clays with the 28" barrel and it handles very nicely.

Dave

I'm no expert but I would say a box call and some kind of slate call. Box call for long distance calling to get the boys attention and slate call for quiet purrs and putts if you get them coming in. I haven't been able to master a mouth call yet but if you can they are probably better than a slate because it keeps your hands free and less movement. If you're in London at all Archers Nook has the best selection and price on calls and decoys that I've seen.

Dave

Couldnt agree with you more Dave the Archers Nook has better prices then ANYONE(even Walmart) around!!!!

Actually the range i go to is in Aylmer, just south of Ingersoll. About 20 mins down Culloden Rd, off of hwy 3. Its a great place with an outdoor 100 - 300 yard range, and also another 25 - 50 - 100 yard outdoor range as well. Both keep you covered from the elements. There is also a 25 yard indoor handgun range as well. Very nice place to shoot and not to expensive. About $190 a year with insurance. If you need any additional information just go to this link....

Hey Dave, i stopped by the TSC in Woodstock here, and they pretty much had nothing. A couple parkas, they actually had 3 inch shells (Walmart and CT didn't) and maybe a few turkey calls and decoys. Nothing to get excited over. Think i'll just pop over to the Archers nook, since i'm in London quite often anyways.
