This is way out there , but try and follow along , I know its far fetched but anyway.
Having a DNR web page to go, and report game you see. This could be setup in many ways, but I was thinking keep it simple. Mark the spot where you see the animal (would be able to pick what species/### in drop down menu) on your gps (or topo) , then when you get back home , go to the site and report it via the map on the site which would be geared up for this.(confuser experts would know how)
I was thinking this would help DNR in their number crunching , cause we are more in numbers than them.
Along with that maybe reporting your bait site (bear , required in NS) and anything else , like Poachers , whatever....
It could be setup , so only you , and DNR know (info kept secret) so no one sees where all the sightings are.
You could maybe have to log onto the site to avoid bogus entries.
So what ya think? :D

I imagine they would not need to know the exact GPS co-ordinates. I imagine a general area like township or county would be good enough.

But what if six people in the same area report the same deer??? A heard of 10.
Now you got 60 deer running around.

Wooooot! season open all year:dancingbanana:

I know :( , but maybe we could count on most folks to be accurate., and in the end quality data would get to the folks that need it. All in an effort to show the country that hunters care about conservation. Good press sorta thing. This would all have to be hashed out with DNR , they may like the idea, and be able to focus on those folks that break the laws. As for how would hunters know, the web site could be added to the licence booklet.

In this area the folks in fish and wildlife already know who to ask and they do. They will talk to the guys who are active and involved in the local hunting communty, like the outfitters, the big and successful camps and the wild game butchers. They also rely heavily on mandatory reporting, usually if a guy is conscientious enough to fill out a mandatory report he is not going to fudge the numbers.

We have a study running here, the british deer society ask members and non members to report the deer they see. this is to trackthe spread of escaped and hybridised non native strains. They use a chart in colour if possible to assist the spotter and they keep this up at all of the country shows thay attend. They plot them at the shows for you to see. I often used to see some from the commuting train on land I wouldnt have seen otherwise. This is helpful to them.

I know for a fact it would work, the MNR doesn't have a clue on their numbers, especially by running around counting deer crap piles.

So far they've kept the amount of doe tags in 45 up way to high on whats actually there, one side of the island has a lot more deer than the other but because there are 40 deer getting shot in a field at the foot of the island they figure there are just as many in the hardwoods at the head of the island, not a clue!!!!!!

The St Joe Hunters and Anglers have a map where people can post where they've been seeing the newly transplanted turkeys on it thats broken down into the actual lots marked out on the map, this is a big help cause when I looked at it I knew just how many were actually moving through my lot, would be great if they'd do this with deer as well.

makes you wonder if the MNR should give u the science stuff and fund a charity to do it with hunters help and then share the research. Oh wait thats what we do and not because we have an MNR but rather because we dont!
