Thinking about a Gew 98...

My 1917 Amberg. Markings are for the post war Einwohnerwehr Bayern, "Bavarian Citizen's Guard". These paramilitaries were conservative counterrevolutionaries, drawn from the citizenry at large unlike the Freikorps who were recruited from demobbed soldiers but fulfilling a similar role in opposing the Bolshevik attempt to fill the political void in post Imperial Germany. Fully matching and untouched.

Fantastic rifle. A really interesting and unique piece of history you have there.

You have that right. What makes her particularly interesting is that she is an Amberg made rifle, which means she was likely to have stayed with Bavarian troops. In this case, we know she was with a Bavarian unit at the end of the war and she was also likely to have stayed with the soldier that carried her home in 1918.

The stock is also a very fine example of late war ersatz beech wood, used to supplement walnut but never completely replacing it, and is clearly marked with a latin style "B" under the fire proof marks on the right side.

You can also see the gothic style "crown over L" (King Ludwig III of Bavaria; proof mark to the right just behind the take down disc, right side of the butt stock) which is a typical crown proof for Bavarian issued rifles and would date the rifle between 1913 and 1918 but in this case we know it to a 1917 made stock.

Again, I am quite envious of this example, make sure to keep her clean and well polished just like the original owner would have done :).

On that note, I am curious, have you shot the rifle, eos ?

Yes, but never given it a serious work out. Fired a few rounds of FNM 8mm for function testing. I have plenty of 8 still so I should probably take it out a few times more and see what it can do.

nice rifles Nabs, I am the proud owner a sporterized 8mm Mauser JS (.323) brought home after WW2 by an uncle who passed it down to me,I use it to hunt moose and it is quite a nice rifle that shoots really well with the handloads I make.Have you or someone you know tried superformance or leverevelution in an 8mm. Varget is my choice powder now but if improvements can be made, whynot

I haven't tried either of those powders, I have used IMR 4064 for two years now and it has proven to be a nice light load for my oldies.

Glad to hear another 98 is being shot and putting meat on the table instead of rotting away in someone's basement.

Apparently the Germans made a bicycle rifle based on the Gew 98. The differences being a sling arrangement like the Kar 98a and a bent down bolt handle with a cut out under the handle similar to the Kar 98a. A number of these were used as a basis for sniper rifles.

Yep, you are right. It was a specially produced rifle for issue to cyclist troops and the basis of which was carried on when the Kar98b was authorized in 1925.

I have yet to see a surviving example in person, has anyone else ?

The one example I dream of owning is a Gewehr 98 that was sent to the German colonies, German South West Africa especially. Armourers there bent the bolt handles down to better conform with the stock for carry when mounted on horse back and modified the Lange sight for a shorter range engagements. From what I read, many rifles were destroyed, lost, or captured and handed out to the natives when the British and French groups pushed on through. I, again, have yet to see a surviving example, has anyone else ?

Picked up this nice 1916 DWM. It's matchign apart from the front sight blade (unmarked replacement) and the cleaning rod which is marked "06" and should be marked "60". It came with the rifle (so maybe a factory error?) which looks to have been an attic find from the UK that someone had proofed and imported to Canada. The manner of the proofs look 1960's UK to me, similar ot the glut of parker-hale Lee's we had come over around that time.

When I got it, it had likely not been disassembled since WW1 and was covered in nearly 100 years of grime and light surface rust that mostly came off with a little oiled steel wool. The buttplate was orange with rust and needed a little more elbow grease, but it was worth it as it's the matching buttplate and cleaned up well enough. VERY happy to finally have a decent G98 :)

I would certainly be happy with a Danzig made rifle. You notice a variation in the crown style used on the stamp from 1900 up to 1914 and during ww1.

My father has a 1907 Spandau action he used in his DCRA target rifle, one of his best-shooting rifles. He won many matches here and went to bisley numerous times in the 60's.

What started me in milsurp was my first G98 1913 spandau, and an all matching 1917 efurt k98az in almost pristine condition except for a broken bayonnet lug. A friend of mine sold me both for stupidly cheap. Both of us back then had no clue what it was going for. I really like the az so I decide to keep it but the g98 I had no desire for it. The G98 was not matching and had many issues. It was sanded, had a kar az bolt, miss a spring on the lange vizier, had a broker secure screw on the mag well, electro pen on the barrel. Still it look good. See for yourself: https://imgur.com/a/4h4VEol

So I made a post and was asking for 600$.... I got storm in 10 min with phone call. So I decided to pull my add cause cleary had something here. Made a post on reddit and to ask for valuation ( didnt know cgn back then), price were all over the place. Some people told me this was worth 1500$ usd orther wouldnt not even give 200$ for it. But overall most people valuate the gun at 600$. So that was my base. I endend up trading it for a bulgarian refurbish svt-40 with a parade bayonnet + 200$ on my side. At that point I believed that I have made a great deal. But man was I wrong. To this day its one of the deal I regret the most. Even if It had many issue, I can, at anytime buy an svt-40... but at not point in the last years I have seena g98 for sale. I even try to to buy it back to the guy I sold it but he trade it to another guy.

Finally I found one yesterday here on cgn. Pure luck cause the ad only been up for a few minutes. The guy was asking 1700$ for a mismatch 1915 oberndorf with a bayonet that had new wood on the handle. Overall in great shape. Didnt think about it and just write to to guy. He told me I got lucky cause 4 other guy wrote to him right after me. so for a match g98 I think it safe to assume that they are propably going for 2000$+

There are actually many Gewehr 98's in Canada.

The difficult part is finding a very nice honest, as brought back (from WW1, in some rare cases WW2) example. This is typically in the form of an all matching, bolt mismatch, or minor mismatch. They are un-sanded, non-refinished, un-messed with rifles.

There are many boat anchor relics, bubba'd examples, Turk, and non-German used examples. If people want to drive up the prices of crap, then my epic stuff is going up too! ;)

A rifle in good collector condition will be pricey.

A mismatch sanded polished turd is still only that, but if someone wants to ask thousands, and someone buys it, good for them, if they are happy. Supply / demand. I wouldn't touch one.

But, for the patient individual, a "shooter" non-collector grade is attainable, and for a reasonable amount. Heck, two site sponsors have "shooter" Gewehr 98's right now for a reasonable amount.

BUT, that being said, quality milsurps are no longer coming to market as often as they used to, and there are many more collectors now. Prices will only continue to rise.

Ive been looking for one for a while, and ive check every sponsor on this site after your comment. Cant seem to find one. Are we talking g98 with its trim or sporterize crap?
