Thinking about a MkIII 22/45

Howdy,

Well, as my dear wife has finally bought herself her new pistol, I am now allowed to start thinking about another firearm purchase(!)... The only real hole in my stable is a .22 pistol, and I took some time yesterday to peer at a MkIII 22/45 - The 4.5" version with the fixed sights.

Years ago I had a 6 7/8" MkII, and although it was frighteningly accurate off of a sandbag, it was just too muzzle heavy for me to offhand well - I could quite honestly shoot my CZ75 better, because it "sat" better in my hand.

For my level of skill, I fail to see the logic in adjustable sights on a handgun, and I'm sure that 4.5" of barrel is plenty. For $319 new, it seems like a deal, but after having done a little internet searching, I see quite a few negative comments about all of the safety bells and whistles that Ruger have decided to engineer into the MkIII, and how a few folks are disabling the mag disconnect and internal lock.

Just wondered if anybody on our fair side of the 49th parallel has bought one of these wee guns, and if you could comment on your experience so far.

I bought one last August when they first came out. :D No problems with it to date. I freak'n love it and highly recommend one.

I liked it so much I let my MKII go.

I have the 5.5" 22/45 and a buckmark camper...for the extra $30 buy the buckmark...there are no feeding issues with the buckmark...

I bought a 4.5 inch barreled mk111 22/45 about 6 weeks ago at
Williams Arms in Port Perry and put a brick through it without a hiccup of trouble. It is a hoot to shoot and quite nicely balanced. My wife likes it too as it isn't as long as the bull-barreled 5.5's. Go for it - buy one. Peter.

For $30 less, you could buy the 5.5" 22/45 which comes with 2 magazines, not one like the Buckmark, .... there are no feeding issues with the Ruger. :p
 
I bought one in february. I was scared how well I could shoot with it. I usually can't hit the side of a barn with a pistol, but I get tight groups with this. It's a fun accurate little gun. I wouldn't sell this one ever

I have the 22/45 mkIII 4. somthin inch bull barrel model.
 
maybe I got the two ruger MKIII's made on friday (still have them)...the buckmark must have been made tuesday..the buckmark even eats the cheapest of #### ammo with out a problem...I wish the rugers would as well..I guess it's just me..

what ever your choice you can't go wrong....my three pistol all have features I like and all have their querks....the MKIII bull barrel is stainless which I like, it is picky about the ammo you feed it, it has a nice trigger and shoots very acurately (with most ammo), the buckmark as I said feeds everything well but only shoots Elley and mini mags well, the grips on the buckmark are very nice, the ruger BB and 22/45 grips are cheap feeling, the 22/45 has the worst trigger of the three but I have a new sear to try hopefully that helps, the buckmark is eaiser to clean ....both rugers are a pain to take apart(practice make perfect) , the rugers come with two mags and a rail, buckmark comes with one mag and no rail (I bought a rail from the states), like I said I like the three of them but for a cheap pistol the buckmark would be my first choice....all that being said I have a buckmark contour ordered and I'm looking for a Ruger MKII just to see what they are all about....good luck with your choice...once you're bitten there is no turning back

If you want a decent sized .22lr with nice sights, take a gander at the Tanfoglio Force .22lr that Freedom Ventures stocks

The internal lock is bunk, I've never used it and don't plan to. As for legality, I'm happier keeping a trigger lock on it just to be sure. It fits those large Master locks well so it's no biggie for me.
 
That Tanfoglio is a nice looking pistol... Kinda one step up from the class of what I'm looking for, but thanks very much for the suggestion!

I just ordered a 22/45 MKIII 4.5" Slab bbl from Wholesale Sports (should get it in a couple of weeks:D )
With all the comments about this gun(some good/some not so good), I was woundering what is the "best" ammo to get?
I've read about how difficult it is to take this gun apart and to put it together....so I'm looking for clean ammo that will not cause many FTE's & FTF's.

Its not difucult to take apart and re asemble, just a little tricky and a sinch if you you know how. Although, you want to keep the manual, because these things take allot of rds to get dirty enough to need cleaning, and you will likely forget how to do it before the next cleaning. Just buy a few federal bulk packs and have at it.
 
I've never had a FTF or FTE with any ammo, granted I shoot federal bulkpacks (36 grain copper washed hollow-points in a 525 round box), american eagle, or federal champion 40 grain lead solids/copper washed solids. I think as long as you stay away from Remington Thunderbolts you should have no worries over dirty ammo.

As for disassembly, once you get the hang of it it's no big deal. The first time though, took me 3 hours and a 50 post CGN thread to get it right. The instruction manual is not correct in it's reassembly method. Later tonight I'll get the gun out and post basic instructions for you.
