I just shoot a 1911 (non-norc) and a M&P40 and I found the 1911 recoil more managable (for me and yes it was a full size .45, no 9mm) so I'm thinking about the norc marstar got over a 40. Anyone have a good (or bad) advice for me?

My Norc 1911(9mm) works great, even though it isn't the prettiest girl at the dance. Most people will say the same thing. Some will say a norinco will make your willy fall off.

Was the 1911 in .45?
Some manufacturers make the 1911 in 9mm and that would make the recoil much less noticeable than a .40 cal.
I have the M&P in 9mm and find it very tolerable. Before you discount the M&P consider that they have 3 different sized grip swells available. Maybe a better fit would help with the recoil.

Two of my shooting buddies have 1911's in .45. One is a Para and the other is a S&W. I find them to both be pretty good at taming recoil and I imagine it is from their physical heft and straight grip. Both of them are a bit heavier than a polymer unit.

Lots of people find .40S&W a very snappy round, with more a more objectionable recoil than .45 Auto. Combine that with the .45 in a much heavier steel framed gun and you get your results.

The Norc 1911's are decent guns and offer great value. I have owned several and have nothing bad to say about any of them. I still own two and don't plan to sell either anytime soon.

If cost is an issue, both 40S&W and 45 Auto are expensive rounds to shoot if you don't reload. If you want a 1911 and lower cost ammo, a Norc NP-29 will give you the 1911 chassis in 9mm for a great range gun. I think the new Marstar ones offer an adjustable rear sight patterned after the Bomar style, as well.

I can't find any mention on their website or the CGN Marstar forum, care to expand on this?

I thought I saw them on Marstar's sight as well. I can't find them now either. Gunnar has one for sale tho. www.armco-guns.com/DSC09111.JPG

Personally, I shoot way better with he M&P than I do with a stock norc 1911. Nicer fit and finish there as well. It would be a no brained M&P for me. Why.40 cal though? Buy it in a 9 mm if it's just for paper.

I couldn't choose between a 1911 and a M&P 40. So I have both, got the M&P about a month ago, only shot it once and love it plus I got the range and carry kit which is a great deal. I find the M&P to just fit like a glove in my hands. My 1911 just showed up today a Kimber Custom II TLE/RL and love it so far and I think if someone tried to take it away I'd probably pistol whip them with it.

That probably doesn't help you much but if ya can't afford both pick whichever you like. The M&P will run like clockwork out of the box. As others have said the Norc may need some work or you might get a winner.

I have a Norc 1911 commander and I love it...I have sold a number of other pistols before this kid...a ruger GP100, A smith 19-3...but I've kept the Norc...why??? because it feels good and it kicks ass.....45..
I also own a GSG .22 and a CZ 75 so I know my handguns...I met a fellow at the range the other day who had a Sig...I think it was a 226 or whatever...I had the Norc copy which I had sold and I looked at the difference and I thought what the hell....Norc's generally speaking are excellent for the price...I've never had an issue with any Norc I've bought.
