Thinking about a scout rifle or small game.

I've been playing with the idea of building a scout rifle. Ill be going against coopers rules a little as it will have to be in an light caliber. Something that is Southern Ontario small game legal.

I'm looking for a good platform with open sights, something short and will take a scope easily. To make the search easier it doesn't have to be a forward mounted scope although it is preferred. I would also prefer something in 223.

Any suggestions?

Mine is a 1942 husquvarna 6.5x55. 18.5" barrel, williams aperature. She sports a "sporterized" original military stock that I'm thinking of swapping for something synthetic. One of few rifles that hold a permanant spot in the safe. Carries, points, shoots and knocks "em down like a dream.
