Hello fellow CGN,
Im thinking of getting a 1979 Winchest model 94. This one has a bit of pitting and usual wear marks. I plan on shooting it before I buy it to be sure. My concerns are the following.
What are they worth?
Are they a good deer gun?
What issues could there be that need considering?

I think a lever gun is about as cool as it get for shooting, especially if I can put meat in the freezer. I appreciate any and all input from all of you guys there.

Thanks!!

Assuming its in 3030, yes its a wonderful deer gun. Light, fast handling, and more then enough to drop a deer.

Mine is of the same era, mid to late 70s, and functionally it is fine. Ive owned it for around 10 years and its never given me a hickup. Cycles fine, as accurate as I could expect from an open sighted lever gun.

My only complaint is the finish on the metal is crap. I can ignore that though, so i dont care.

The Model 94 in 30-30 is a classic deer gun. If you are going to hunt open sights in tight bush, it is a perfect choice. Depending on asking price, you might be best served waiting for a nice pre-64 to come up, which they do fairly often on the EE. The finish of the wood and metal is superior to the post-64s, although the late 70s manufactured ones are not nearly as bad as those made in the late 60s. Value is hard to determine without pictures or a better description but a post-64 with some pitting/wear would probably be worth $350 tops.

I purchased a mint condition early 80s angle eject 94, for $450 delivered, so if you shop around, they can be found for a good price. I installed a Williams peep sight, and it works well for a close range rifle.

I have one from '76, paid 400 bucks for it. Blueing is great on it, some wear on the wood and it shoots and cycles like a dream. Never had any problems what so ever with it.

The only downside to a Win 94 is the felt recoil for the podwer of the cartridge. It's a relatively light rifle with a narrow butt stock. Feels like more recoil than there is. That and if you're thinking of scoping it, it has to be a side mount. The iron sights are poor in low light too. Wouldn't pay much for one that has been abused. Pitting is the result of rusting and means it has been abused. Usually means the bore isn't good either.
There ain't no rumors in Canada. There are a lot of rumours though.

Jakeazz....there is no podwer in Canada either, just powder.

Shouldn't throw bricks in a glass house.

I'll get flamed for this, but what the hell.

They are fun guns to have (I have three) but the fact is anywhere in BC including the so-called jungles of Vancouver Island you can get shots from 3 to 300 yards and with the sights that a 94 comes with at 100 yards you're stretching it.

Not true. Mine looks like hell due to a poor finish. I baby my guns and nothing else in my safe comes close to looking as bad as my Win 94. I swear it rusts just from looking at it.

People shoot animals with bows. Surely he can withhold a shot until the deer is in appropriate range.

True enough. I do not disagree. No argument.

All I'm saying is for a general all-round hunting rifle, the Model 94 30-30 has its limitations. The Original poster is from B.C. You might start out your day in a jungly creek bottom or even thick timber, but in the afternoon find yourself at the bottom of a huge clear cut only to spot a big mulie 300 yards away at the edge of the trees.

Like I said, I have three of 'em. Plus a Marlin. The best has a receiver sight on it. That improves the accuracy at 100 yards.

There should be no problems with the operation and reliability of the rifle. The post 64 94's are known to have poor/low quality materials used so the finish/look of the rifle isn't as nice as the pre 64's. Great woods/deer gun

Great info,
I shot the gun today and the pitting was all over the receiver with some light surface rust on the attachments bar for the lever, visible when operating the lever. I walked away from it as he was unwilling to drop the price and I was not willing to have a gun that looks like $hit prior to me. I think for hunting vancouver island this would be a great unit.
Am I unrealistic for thinking I can get a good one for $300?
