thinking about buying another CZ. 452 or 455?

Look at the targets that are available when one decides to purchase a CZ.
The proof is right there in that they will both be very close .
While these targets prove that they fire they also show the inherit accuracy CZ builds in every firearm.

The factory test target is a test for function rather than accuracy. It is not an indication of how accurate a particular rifle will be.

To the best of my knowledge, the barrel is the major difference. The stock is inlet differently to allow for different mag well and magazines. I'm assuming the 455 Varmint uses the same action screw setup as the 455 American, both screws on the action itself as opposed to the 452 which has one on the barrel dovetail and one on the action.
I have a 452 Varmint, it shoots very well indeed.
I'd recommend buying a 452 while you still can, I doubt you'll ever have any trouble selling it if you want to. I believe the 455 will be available for the foreseeable future.

The advice given by Chilly807 is very good.

I matched my 455 varmint up with a Lilja EPS match barrel. She shoots lights out. That being said the barrel was as much as the 455, but damn...what a sweet shooter she is. The factory barrel was no slouch either. Matched any of my other 5 .22lr CZs which are all 452's.

Thanks,
Cal.

Holy Smokes! Mike, you sold me your Scout, remember? Thanks so much again, its a great shooter, just as accurate as my Varmint and Style, in a compact package. My current favorite.

It still amazes me how accurate the Scout is. I only wish there was an option for a lighter composite stock so my 8 year old could shoot it off hand.

I love my 452 Varmint above all other rifles I own... I'm not sure about the 455 and don't want to knock it, but the 452 is undeniably legendary! I use it with a single shot adapter/mag... amazing accuracy. I feed it a strict diet of Eley ammo mind you :)

which flavour of Eley works best with it?

The kind that's "in tune" with the barrel and has consistent muzzle velocity. Your rifle will be individual in it's preferences compared to an others even if they came off the assembly line right after each other. I have seen the cheap, entry level $6.90/box 50 Eley Sport out perform the $20+/box 50 Eley Match and Tenex out of one rifle! Even though the velocity average of the expensive ammo was much better, the load just wasn't "in tune" with the barrel and it showed. At 50 yards velocity spread isn't that big of a deal, but if you plan to go out to 100 yards then the difference will sure show up.

I use Eley Team and Eley Tenex ;)

Get it by the brick!

i guess i will just have to buy a box of each and try them all before i invest in a brick... along with all the other cartridges i have already.

There is a reason they shoot this stuff in the Olympics and competition! Either Eley Tenex or Lapua Center-X are the top of the top.

After this you can try different lots to find the magical one, but this is for serious shooters you know?

If you can get your hands on a brick of either, you'll be set. This way you have all the same lot...

The Eley Team I shoot is cheaper, but is basically Tenex ammo that did not shoot as well in tests by the manufacturer. They keep only the most consistent/accurate for the Tenex boxes, the rest goes into team, match, club... This is my understanding from research on rimfirecentral. And I see this, the Team gives me occasional flyers. The Tenex is just shooting perfection so far.

So you can believe everyone who says that they get great accuracy from CCI standard velocity or other cheap ammo... but when you step into the high grade 22 ammo, you realize why it is used by pros.

If anyone needs a reliable contact for Eley ammo, talk to Peter Krause - North Sylva Co.

theres a place in the toronto area called Target Shooting Products. they have the tenex for $215 per brick. is that a good price or can it be had for better?

Nnnn nnn nnnn nnn no! Center X is the TEAM equivalent. Lapua Midas + is to Eley Match and RWS Special Match as Lapua X-Act is to Eley Tenex and RWS R50. But what do I know about ammo? Target Shooting Products/North Sylva is a great source, highly recommended!

Eley Team was discontinued, so what's left is older stock; it's still good, but older. I understand Team was replaced by Edge. Be careful when thinking "equivalent" when comparing products made by the big three .22LR match ammo -- Lapua, RWS, and Eley. A more fair way to compare is perhaps on price, and here the above comparison is certainly valid. Some rifles may shoot one brand of ammo a little better than others, but that doesn't always hold true.

For those shooting stock CZ's, it is likely unnecessary to use the most expensive ammo to achieve the best results the rifle can produce -- at least the vast majority of the time. CZ rimfire shooters will usually see very satisfactory results using entry level match ammo such as SK Standard Plus and similarly priced ammo from RWS and Eley, although many CZ shooters on RFC report that the German made ammo -- SK (Lapua) and RWS -- yield better results than that made in England. To put cost in perspective, pricing for SK Standard Plus is close to $70 per brick in Canada; Center-X is about $125. The top of the line is in the neighbourhood of $200 plus per brick.

If it were me, I think I'd pick up a few boxes of SK Standard Plus, and a few boxes of Lapua Center-X first, maybe some Eley Club. In my experience, CZs seem to shoot SK/Lapua products better than Eley, though as Rabid said that's not always the case.
The Standard Plus is good practice ammo, I get mine for around $7 per box. The Center-X runs about double that and is a bit more consistent, generally speaking. I don't like buying bricks of anything until I know it shoots well from my rifles.
I tried some Eley Club recently, which is supposedly equivalent to Standard Plus. Neither rifle shot it well, so it's relegated to pest/pistol ammo. If I'd bought a brick of Tenex and that happened, there'd be weeping and wailing in the village, believe me!
There will be differences lot to lot as well, in the same ammo.
High velocity stuff is very rarely as accurate as standard velocity.
There are quite a few refinements you can make to the rifle itself if you're so inclined, some of us have gone that route with varied results. Most yield minor improvement, some none at all.
I tend to be a middle-of-the-road kinda guy. I'll spend $75-$125 for a brick of mid-range ammunition, I don't feel like "wasting" my range time with anything less. The other side of the coin is I'm too cheap to drop over $200 on a brick of Tenex or Midas+/Exact.
The accuracy hunt is a slippery slope, I've said that before and I believe it still. I've found a "ledge" halfway down the hill and plan on staying there!
You can also deal with Peter at Hirsch Precision for SK/Lapua or Eley ammunition. Also Brad at Nordic Marksman. Both are in Nova Scotia and will ship anywhere in Canada.
