I thinking about making the jump into a black rifle and want to stick to a non restricted so I can take it out to my camp and shoot stuff with it. I want to keep it under the 2000 mark and was looking at the HK-SL8. It looks like it fits the bill pretty well. Just wanted to see what the opinions are on the rifle? Am I missing something else in the same price range and performance?

It comes down to what you like the look of. An SL8 is a great precision rifle but for me an XCR would be more versatile and funner to shoot. More options for upgrades.

I am having the same problem. One day I will get out of bed wanting an XCR the next day I want a SL8.

I just bought an sl8 and have taken it out shooting a couple times, I love it. I dont know if that helps... it is very easy to take down, and it is accurate and dependable. thats more than what I was looking for in a black rifle. but I was looking for a good coyote rifle that was also a black rifle and the sl8 fits the bill very well.

Im not sure if that helps but at least I tried :p

I know I'll take some flak for being a newbie and making a less than popular suggestion, but I really like my AR-180B2. As deer/coyote gun it's been great, I've never had a problem getting parts for it (Wolverine or Brownells) and it consistantly shoots in there with the AR's. I know there's a lot of talk about whether or not we'll see a new model, but for someone not quite certain about havng a 'black rifle', it seems like a good buy ($1200ish, got mine for $900). There's also a Ruger Mini 14 or 30, but I've never been a big fan. In any case, my two cents... Failing that, get a Norinco m-14, tac it up and punch some big holes.

You could also go with a Benelli MR1. I think they're running around the $1,500-$1,600 range or so. Probably not in quite the same performance category as the SL8, although you can use standard AR magazines in it.

Benelli MR1. But I am also looking forward towards the Keltec. I am not sure if it will be the same quality as a Benelli. I am expecting lower from the rumors around the net.

I actually forgot all about the MR1. I was watching them about a year ago and they seemed like a sweet little rifle. How are they holding up and where is the best place to pick one up?

This is always a tough choice. You probably have to look at what is its main purpose and what cal you would like. Here is my wish list. I have a MR1 and M305 they are both good.

Kel tec makes 3 interesting models. The Sub 2000 (9mm) SU-16A (5.56 mm) and RFB (.308).

FN AR .308 heavy and light barrel. (you could hunt with this one)

I am not shure if these are non-restricted.
DPMS Panther LR308

Armalite AR180B-2 if you can find one.

Hope this helps. Let us know what you decide to get.

Nothing wrong with the AR-180B. I love mine.:D

Unfortunately though, since they're discontinued right now, demand has upped the price for used ones. In the last few months, I've seen used ones listed in the EE on average for between $1500-1700, depending on what accessories are included. Any cheaper, and they're usually snapped up within a day or two.

If I had deep enough pockets I would have my MR1 now. Cant forget the lower end of the spectrum either, like the cz858, mini14, any number of m14 clones or the like and buy some accesories for them,, as there is a large aftermarket parts base, and have them shipped to your home and work from all across the country. The SL8 is likely top notch as well. Im not helping I guess.Fvck it,, BUY THEM ALL. Stick it to a liberal every couple month or so and buy a type of fvcking black rifle(budget, beg or borrow). Im so sorry btw.

Benelli on CGN or many of the forum sposnors have them for sale. I think Stoeger Canada is the official importer.

They go new from 1500 to 2 grand. Used as low as 1200 to 1400. Fits most AR MAGS. I will be ordering PMAGS.
