Thinking about getting my first AR15 in 5.56

alrighty then, so i have a craving to get an ar15... :d
my budget is 700-1000$ for the gun, i was looking at a few and here is what ive come up with so far

1. DPMS oracle from wolvering supplies at 875$

2. Back forge r15 from my local gun store for 779$ ( using hi cal's webpage for spec reference)

3. build it myself starting with this mag tactical complete gen 4 lower ( without stock, buffer and buffer spring) i might increase my gun budget if going for custom build...

i do not want a norinco AR. i might try my luck in 3 gun once i get my black badge.. or do some service rifle matches as well.. for now this will be my learning the ar platform gun.

any thoughts on my choices? ( i plan on using this scope http://bushnell.com/hunting/rifle-scopes/ar-optics/1-4x-24mm-throw-down-pcl# ) checked it out on my friends AR and it was good

i also reload 308 for my garand so i could possibly reload for a 7.62 upper.. and im a lefty, so i would like to know what ambidextrous capabilities these choices have ( including having to change parts for left handed use)

hmmm, looks interesting. i see from a review it has a ambi mag release from the factory? this would be a plus for me since im a lefty. also are stag arms any good? i noticed IRG has left handed stag rifles in stock.. a bit more expensive though :(

Yes and no
Yes you can get the parts you want right from the get go and not worry about swapping parts and trying to resell for a lose and no since its your first ar you wont know what you like yet and will more then likely end up changing parts anyway.
When I first started in ar's like most people I went through the "bolt as much crap as I can to my gun" phase yet now I know what I like and dont like and what I need and dont need. I would say buy your firsr one any of the ones you listed are fine or even check out the ee then if you decide the ar15 world is for you and you have an idea of the end game then build your dream ar. Dont forget when you build there are some specific tools you need and some that are really nice to have and shipping cost will generally make the budget climb very fast since you will more then likely have to buy from different vendors.

good point, i think ill go for that black forge AR, its 779$ at my LGS.. :)..

i was also told the sig 516 is a good rifle, its piston driven so its easier to clean.. btu 1600$ after taxes is a bit out of my budget unless i wait another month or so.. worth it?

Imo piston ar's are the answer to a question that was never asked. To be perfectly honest they will all do the same thing buy the one you like and have fun with it, until you start getting into higher end stuff (kac, ect) your not going to too alot of difference. I will say avoid nea based on personal experience I cannot recommend them and with the price of ar's dropping I have a hard time justifying norinco.

This is all just my opinion of course
 
if you want brand new Ameican AR for a song, you have to know where to look
$440 USD less stripped lower, which can be had on EE for $100 CAD (spike, aero)

I'd likely buy a Smith & Wesson MP15 (basic version) if I only had $1,000 to spend, which would be enough for the rifle, tax and a little ammo.

From my accounts reading about this rifle from owners here on CGN they come across as a reliable and decently accurate rifle.

However I saved a little more and went with a DD instead.

One good thing about affordable AR's like the Smith MP15 is that they hold their value well when it comes time to sell (if taken care of) leaving little risk if you decide to buy another more expensive model of AR later.

So my recommendation would be buy the Smith and enjoy it while you save for a CC (Colt Canada), DD, LMT, KAC or other premium brand AR...

I picked up a dpms oracle on EE, great sale, the gun was BNIB, just wanted a simple AR. I have had others but sold them off at various times. So now back in the AR game for $600, leaving lots of $$ for ammo, optics and accessories. Shop around
 
Arms East is the Stag Arms distributor for Canada. They carry dedicated lefty ARs. Stag is a very good quality product. Their parent company is CMT which provides parts to umpteen different manufacturers, including the "top tier" makers.

I would suggest buying a complete rifle for your first AR. Learn the platform, figure out what you like, become wholly familiar with its manual of arms and then you'll be able to make an informed decision as to what kind of build you'd like to do.

Finally, shop around! There are some smoking deals still to be had if you spend a few hours with Google. Best of luck!
