Thinking about jumping into the rimfire game

I found myself in your shoes not to long ago. I wanted a .22 that was a) fun to shoot, and plink and b) a rifle I could use to hunt grouse and rabbit. I decided to go with the Ruger 10/22, and have not regretted my decision at all! Put some half decent glass on it and you'll be sniping rabbits, grouse, and squirrels with regular consistency between 50-75 yards. Also as someone else mentioned "It's the Indian not the arrow" - good quote. Get out and practice.

Not the one I had.

Bought a marlin m60. Most accurate gun for the money I've used. Got mine for under $200. Sr22 I had shot 3"+/- groups at 30 yards. Marlin was average .5" at 50 yards with mini mags and cci blazer 50 round boxes.
Sr22 $600, marlin m60 $180.

Maybe the 10/22's form 20 years ago were better but I wouldn't be buying a new one. Local shop sent one back because you couldn't even pull the bolt back it was so rough inside.

Again, this...

It amuses me that when I made my initial comment, the first two reactions were to insult me, instead of the position I took.

Older 10/22 had fair accuracy, never "great" out of the box, but fair.

The 10/22 that Ruger has cranked out to make a buck off the gun panic in the states over the past few years... Notsomuch. You might get a good one, or you might get a crap one. It's really a roll of the dice with them. Really inconsistent production and QC. The fact I had to take a Dremel to buff out the overcasting inside the receiver of a brand new 10/22 I bought last year just to get it to function properly, speaks to the sh!ts not given by Ruger over the past few years about the quality control they apply to the line. Poke around a bit online and you'll come across a lot of people who've had similar problems.

If you decide to go with a 10/22 as a platform, spend the extra $$ and go with a Dlask or other aftermarket, higher end build. Those will definitely shoot better that most of us here can.

As for the CZ's 512, 452, 455... You can spend a long time searching the internet trying to find someone who's gotten a bad one and not find anything. They're really high quality builds, especially at this price point. For the 452/455, other than putting a scope on it, the only mod you might consider is the Yo-Dave trigger kit.

Anyway, I know the 10/22 fan crowd is even more ardent that the AR-tards, so I'm farting against the wind by saying it. But I actually own both a Ruger and a CZ. I've spent the time printing groups on paper. And if you're after accuracy past 25 yards, and a quality rifle, it's not even a question as far as I'm concerned.

Buy a CZ. You won't regret it.

Ok narrowed to four...cz512,452, 10/22 and lastly the Browning BLR 22... Not a fan of their auto.....has anyone tried the lever?

Of those, the 452... preferably the Lux.

If you are going to a lever action, look at the Henry Frontier H001T... it is far smoother and more accurate than any of my Browning, Winchester or Marlin lever .22's... but you would be best off starting with the 452 Lux.

+1 on the CZ from your list. I went down the 17hmr route with a savage 93 BVSS. Nice rifle, a little cheaper to buy but the ammo is much more expensive. I figure I'll pick up a marlin 795 when I have craving for cheap but accurate .22 fun. The only downside of the 795 are the sights - crude but serviceable. If I wasn't gonna buy the 795, my second choice would have been a takedown 10/22. Very pack able, fun little gun.

I have been wanting a Savage mk II for a long while after shooting my brothers quite a bit, its a very good little rifle. The ns522 peaked my interest though so I just had to get one and see what all the fuss is about. I own a 10/22 already, nicely made as are all Ruger products but the accuracy isnt anything to write homs about. I hope this ns522 is as "lazer" like as all the videos and posts say it is.

^^^^^ This, the Lever is a ton of fun as well, I have both and very accurate

Ok, was inches from a CZ but couldn't find a 452...and BLR just not for me, ended up in a 10/22 and excited as this will be my first official project gun...thinking off starting out with trigger mods and some minor puttering.

Thanks for all the great advice.
