As the title says, I've been thinking about setting up an annual charity shooting event.

I'd like to get some ideas as to how to categorize different shooters (iron sights, scoped, $5000+ tackdrivers, etc) and also to brainstorm different courses of fire. So far, I was just thinking about a biathlon style target. Maybe have a 5k race and then finish at a range?

I'm really just hoping to get some ideas from this.

Thanks!

Great idea to have a charity shoot !!
Biathlon style would eliminate half the guys I know from competing(old and fat LOL). A lot of people are not in the physical condition required to run 5 K. Most guys I know enjoy doing a fun shoot that they might do well at.
Try an informal shoot but break the groups down by equipment and have an age category for the younger shooters. I know when I was younger it was intimidating to shoot against older people.
You could have it broken down simply as:
Tactical-Stock(Open sights)
Tactical-Mod(Include scopes)
Hunting- Open sight
Hunting-Scoped
Target-Open sights
Target-Scoped
And maybe a kids section(with supervision of a parent) to introduce young shooters to the sport and light competition.
You could set targets up at longer distances to make it more challenging as well.
Maybe set a limit to each class for # of shooters and have a pre register. If your club is the PFGC I think you have multiple ranges you could set up on as well. That would be a bonus !!
The more inviting and you make it the more people will come.
If it will be open to people outside of you club please send me a PM and I will pass the work around to guys I know.
Again great idea.

Well, I don't have a club yet. This is all just an idea. I wanted to get a general idea together first and then pitch it to a club around here or even somewhere else in Ontario.

My buddy and I were talking about the fitness level of some shooters and that it wouldn't be a great idea to exclude any. Maybe I'll have the run and gun idea as one event of many? I'm not sure.

We were also talking about having the kids match shooting at confetti filled balloons. Seems like that may be fun.

This sounds good. Like you say you could have a class for the "fit crew". My daughter loves shooting at crackers, grapes, apples. Anything that reacts when hit.
It will depend on the direction (serious or fun)you want to take this.

I think serious for adults, maybe bullseye shooting with a cool prize for the winner but fun for kids.

A guy I know does a zombie shoot every year in the states. It's getting pretty involved but looks like a ton of fun.

Each summer for my friends and family I set up a golf ball shoot. It started out for the kids but then the adults got into it. I set up 3 balls per shooter. They shoot each ball. I don't do a shot count per ball for misses. But if the ball moves no more shots at that one. They are set up on a line that is twenty yards from the shooting position. I then measure the distance the ball moved. The ball that went farthest wins. Sometimes i have to measure how far the biggest chunk went. Everyone has to use the same ammo so the bullet speeds are similar. But rifle choice is open. I do a kid class, teen class and adult class.

Who would work for sponsors?
Savage is first on the list but are there any other firearms manufacturers in the area? Maybe Accuracy Plus? Otherwise, I'm not sure.

I was thinking about going to many large businesses (quaker, GE, siemens, etc) and dropping off a flier to see if they could put a team in. A team competition would be cool.

Just ideas right now though :)

You could try Monsen's in Peterborough. Their a supplier of Hawke Optics(scopes ,bino's rings) to this area I was told. They also distribute archery equipment.
Gagnon Sports in Oshawa might donate something.
You could try Stoeger Canada in Oshawa. They are the distributor of a lot of major manufacturers of firearms ( Stoeger, Benelli, Beretta, etc) They may not donate but might give you a break on price for prizes.
