i've had my rpal for a few months now & love shooting, the club i belong to has a course set up for IPSC matches, i've never watched one but i think i get the general premise, speed, accuracy, excellent decision making seem to be whats needed. i'm curious tho, other than a black badge course, what else do i need to get started?

Handgun, holster, 4 mags and mag pouches, rigid belt and a good attitute. Okay the good attitude is optional but it sure makes matches more fun. lol
My advice is go watch a match and talk to some shooters. Your next questions will probably be which handgun. IPSC doesn't have to break the bank. Lots of production guys shoot off the shelf guns like glocks (but eventually you'll buy a Shadow).

I shoot IPSC (when I do) with a stock Browning HP, a 1990's Bianchi holster and mag pouches attached to a 1960's Canadian Army surplus web belt. Buy a cheaper gun and gear, and put lots of money into ammo.
But ... IPSC has a reputation for having more than its share of silly gaming. I thought the word 'freestyle' meant not an absence of rules, but open-minded acceptance of fair play. When I could see two target in one window and shot both, only to be told I didn't engage the target "properly", I lost a lot of interest.

IPSC is so much fun!! My only regret is that I didn't start sooner! Watch a match, go out to practices and try out the gear before buying. It's easy to buy the wrong stuff and regret it later. Most IPSC shooters will gladly let you try out their stuff and be happy to see new guys show up. Bring a box of 9mm if you can, safety glasses and hearing protection if you can.

Unless specified in the stage write up there is no 'improper' way to engage targets, shoot 'em as you see em, usually 2 shots each. To the OP, don't get too hung up on 'the right gear' buy a pistol you like, at least four mags, A GOOD BELT, holster and a pile of ammo. Have fun!

I can't stress the good belt and holster enough. I started with a Fobus holster and this 5.11 belt. I QUICKLY changed to a bladetech holster. I still have the belt because I can't justify the money for a new one, considering this one doesn't hinder me (it is durable, but not rigid like the other belts with the outer and inner belt). The only problem with my belt is I have to thread all my attachments on, each match. Everyone else with the Double Alpha Belts just leave their gear on the outer belt and stick 'em together before the match starts, a 30sec process.
If I had to purchase again, I'd buy the AA one, hands down.

There must've been a "wall" or something outlined in the briefing. Freestyle is always "shoot them as you see them". It makes for a great stage, if one target has multiple sight-lines to it.
as everyone has said, buy the belts, holster and ATLEAST 5 mag pouches and 6 magazines, eventually. i would even suggest, do the black badge with borrowed equipment if possible cuz trust me, shooting a shot every 10 seconds vs 20 shots (accurate) in 10 seconds is a completely different game. you can pre buy the gun you (think you) want but a vast majority learn the hard way that not all guns are meant to go fast or are fun/easy to shoot the way we need to in this game. theres a reason shadows rule production and 1911/2011s everything else.
sure there wasn't yellow tape between the two? that can be used as a wall rather than putting an actual wall between two target.
freestyle just means shoot as you please (both hands, one hand, doing a handstand etc), rather than strong hand or weak hand only etc. it however does not indicate absence of all other rules such as charge the fault lines or shoot across hard cover and such.
as per gaming, ima gamer, what about it? all it means is i leverage every advantage presented to me in a given stage i can without breaking the rules.
Exactly! One of the reasons I love IPSC. I can come up with a weird way to shoot a stage which MAY play to my strengths. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. But I don't mind, I don't play to win, I play to beat my performance from the previous match.
I have and do sometimes shoot stages in a weird way myself(left handed) but thankfully i get squadded with normal people who help steer me in the right direction.
OP, get your black badge and join up. Most fun you can have with a pistol.

I don't remember seeing any lines. I could see two targets, so I shot them both and didn't stop at the second window. They didn't like how I played!
