What's the best route for a seriously accurate unit....buy the cheapest basic model and upgrade the barrel and internals, or buy the target model and replace the internals?

Basic model - and build it from there.

The accuracy on a target model is modestly better, but not nearly to the amount you can attain with a good aftermarket barrel.

If you're building a REALLY accurate rig (ie: lots of money!), all you're really after is the receiver. Everything else will be replaced anyway.

Target model won't shoot better than any modifled standard model and you have to get rid of the barrel too. By the way target model don't take CCI Stinger.

Guess I got lucky with mine. I kept barrel, stock, receiver, bolt and trigger frame, but replaced all internals with VQ. My 1022T will put 10 rds on a dime at 50m easily.....

So what are guys using these days for aftermarker stocks and barrels?

both of the guns below have the same internals, volq. match hammer / sear's, skeeter triggers, volq. extended mag release and auto bolt drop.

this gun has a factory 10/22T stock on it (bought seperate from another cgn member) and a green mountain barrel 18" stainless fluted, this whole gun including the stripped reciever was basically bought off of CGN. Scope is tasco 6-24x42mmAO in burris zee ring's

this gun was bought new, and it now wears a 16" fluted / compensator Whistle Pig Barrel and a houge overmold stock, scope is luepold knockoff... rings are luepold prw.

Barrel - GM or Clerke for an economical, accurate choice

Stock - Hogue is my personal favorite; very adaptable and cost effective

Interals - VQ or Power Custom (I like VQ more). The hammer, bolt release, mag release, and extractor will GREATLY improve your gun

Base - Power Custom reciever mounted base - my favorite and quite cheap $15-ish)

Definately get a bolt buffer (many to choose from, Ten22 or Weaponkraft); they are quite cheap and are definately worth the few bucks

Looks good wes. I'm partial to laminates and I'm starting to lean towards starting with the T model......I'll have the stock then and could probably hock the barrel for a few bucks to put towards an aftermarket one.....

don't short change the "T" model, most of them only need the crown tuned up and the trigger parts from volq. installed and they will shoot just as good as a custom barrel will.

if your going to buy a 10/22T get the following parts from hawktech,

- Volq. Match Hammer and Sear
- Volq. Extended Mag Release
- Volq. Auto Bolt Release
- Bolt Buffer
- Hex Head Action Screw

total cost is just over $100 US and he ships free to canada...... that is all you need.

I went with a Clerke 16" Barrel, VQ hammer, Bolt Buffer, and Hex Head takedown screw all bedded in a Ruger Deluxe stock with a Bushnell 3200 2-7x32mm scope in Leupold super low rings. It shoots great with CCI Mini Mags and really good with everything else.

Well I caved and bought a blued 10/22T......it was the fancy spiral shaped barrel that sold me:)
Trigger is actually pretty good out of the box, I'm just going to shoot it as is for now and see how it goes. Lock time seems kinda long though.....bit of a lag until the hammer hits the pin. Lebarons, of couse, didn't have any goddamn medium rings in the whole store.....all kinds of guns to sell me but only low and high rings......
There is a dump near my work that probably has rings.....I'll stop in there tomorrow.

If you want, the 'blued' receiver is actually just paint. I stripped the old beat up paint (polystrippa gel) to reveal the aluminum underneath... looks cooler than black on my build.

Hitzy I too liked the laminate stock but I went stainless, I can't tell you how accurate it is yet since I have not had a day shooting this spring/summer where the wind was not really blowing.

But i'll say it is accurate enough that I don't feel the need to always have my HMR out in a gopher field, which is why I bought it to save money feeding an HMR hurts after a while:)

Though I did swap out some of the internals already, VQ hammer ,bolt release and buffer and a big mag release. I too thought the trigger was OK but I found the stuff in a package deal on RFC at too good of a price.

And I am old school if you want really accurate get a bolt gun

I have 8 mossberg bolt .22's with peeps, so I'm on the same page.....:)
I think I might get an over travel screw put in the trigger, or replace it with one that has it built in as there is about 1/8 of an inch over travel. It breaks nice and clean with no creep.......
