Thinking of buying a mini 14

583 series with iron sights shooting off of shooting sticks was MOA. I did the gas bushing change, trigger job as per Gun Doc's video, 1911 bushing, Tech Sights with apeture inserts, thinned blade sight from .085 to .050, shims in between stock and action, removed some material from the stock around the gas block. Only negative that I could give was the need to feed it with large amounts of bullets and the need for hearing protection.

Mega reliable and simple. problems are if you want to go mount an optic. There are a few options but the gun never was made to do that. After a long time of shooting the mini 14 with an optic you will experience jams due to the way the gun ejects brass as it doesn't have a solid pattern. You will also notice your scope getting dinged up as it tosses brass very hard. Another thing is magazines are mega pricey.

I thought the newer ones eject brass more consistently to the side? My Target model does not hit the scope during ejection.

583(2015) Stainless mini 14. LOVE it. All in about $1300, with a strike force stock and bushnell ar optics. Upgraded to a Wolff spring and extended mag release. Shoots as good as I need it to. Regularly keeps up with or even outshoots the low-mid range ar's of my friends. Heavier too though! Lol My best is 1.38" 5 shot with white box norc ammo. Plus I get to shoot it wherever. No one will be able to convince me that Ruger doesn't own the market in this price range.
To the OP, absolutely get one. They are all fun but get a newer one for the accuracy for sure.

I have a newer standard mini. Super reliable, handles the .223 and 5.56. I mostly run barnaul, 55 or 62gr. I'd say it's decently accurate . Around 1.5-3 moa. Don't expect to recover your casings very easily however, they get tossed! I have a barrel strut and ultimak scout hand guard which will stiffen up the action a bit as well. I'm in the process of scoping it for some real accuracy testing with a bunch of different ammo. For now I'm running the iron sights which I don't mind. No issues with my blued version but it is one of the few semi auto .223/5.56 that come in stainless also.

This guy is right on the money. Came with two mags, rail, quick detach rings that hold a zero after on and off. Decently accurate with the scope but I haven't done any bench shooting or ammo testing. I think I could dial it in. Throws ammo so hard it stuck in a wood column beside me. Brass will be MIA for the most part, or damaged. I added an extra 30rnd mag it helps with offhand shooting. Lightweight and short. Non restricted.
What else is there to say. The only problem I have is dreading how much ammo I burn through.

My one gripe would be I hate the rear sight. Feels cheap and I find it a pain in the ass to adjust.

The comments about expensive magazines for the Ruger are funny. Ruger mags are expensive only in comparison to the disposable cigarette-package AR mags that everyone "needs" nowadays, because a 30-round magazine pinned to 5 has such a useful quality to it. If you think a Ruger 5-round magazine for a Mini is expensive, price out a detachable replacement magazine for a Tikka, Sako, Sauer, Steyr...jeez, even Savage magazines cost much more, assuming that you can even find the one you need.

Ruger has, by artfully toeing the line that separates black rifles from traditional rifles, managed to alienate a big chunk of both markets! :)

lol Agreed. Mags aren't that bad honestly. Maybe if you buy them off retards on the EE trying to hock them for double what you can get them for in stores lol

The 5 round Ruger made stubbies (why would you even want another type in this country with our stupid laws) can be found in stores for $37 if you know where to call.
Just ordered 2 actually ;)
Love me my 582 series stock config mini with tech sights

Have a 582 Series one I got like new off the EE for $800
Very reliable, very light, well balanced and surprisingly accurate!
Rear sight is absolute dog sh*t though. If you get one, get a Tech Sight replacement at the exact same time and spare yourself even a single trip out with the stock rear sight. Honestly it's THAT bad.
With the Tech Sight though I can put 55gr Federal bulk ammo into 2 to 3" groups at 100 meters with the irons consistently. I love my mini 14. Best bang for buck non restricted semi auto .223 rifle in Canada right now IMHO.

I concur. Ruger should team up with tech sights and make it the factory option.
