Total.newbie to both the m14 family and shooting in general so be kind.
Tell me everything I need to know or look for when I look at it. Is there a particular year to avoid? Other issues? The surplus place in town has a new 18.6" for 565$ which seems a pretty good price

if you don't do your own oil and filter changes, the m305 is probably not for you. seriously, read all the stickies.view tonyben. as a new shooter, take apart and clean completely any firearm you get. should be part of the course. which ever way you go- welcome and enjoy.

I don't do my own oil and filter changes, but if you have even a slight inclination to mechanical things, you can fairly easily figure out how to do most of the necessary mods to make these rifles solid shooters. As Hungry would say, 'don't buy one M14...buy 2.' Definitely read all the stickies, and post in the forums when you get stuck. These rifles are a lot of fun and there's an ever-increasing number of accessories for them, so you can customize them as you please. My 2 current M14s are a full size, wearing a USGI big red birch stock with a vented handguard and a faux selector switch - classic battle rifle look - and the other is a Dominion Arms SOCOM 18 that I've done in a Scout configuration. Both very cool and fun to shoot. Buy one.

Not sure about that, I don't do the oil change and such but most of the firearm I own, I can completely disassemble and assemble back to fully functional gun, I own more than 20 different firearms so far since I start.

I shoot M305 before but never the less is not my thing, as being Asian man, 5 feet 7 inch doesn't help much.

Don't let that oil change thing discourage you to own the m305, thing can learn down the road, just a matter of time, patience, read and learn either by book and internet. The best part is attend m14 clinic by tactical teacher on gun nutz here, learn faster than book though.

Do.my own oil? Haha I build my own engines! Good to know, I love to tinker.

Sounds like an M305 might be just the sort of project you'd be happy sinking your teeth into

The M305 is the rifle of a tinkerer. Not as clumsy or random as an XCR; an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.

I'm a trained machinist and dabble in engine building (building 400+ horse small block for my trans am among others) so I'm above average for mechanical inclination lol

Probably the most important thing is to buy it from somewhere that you trust to take it back if it's a total lemon. Aside from that the stickies will give you a huge amount of info on what to inspect for, and here's an example of stuff I try to look at when I have the chance to examine before buying (or after, in this particular case): http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/foru...ing-amp-Inspecting-a-2014-Norinco-M305-Shorty

Seems the only decision now is what to buy first, m14 or a 1911..

M14 is the only choice of the two. You will enjoy the endless fun of tinkering, shooting and tinkering some more. Traded mine a while back for an AR15. Have regretted it every day since.

I'll end up with both. I've dreamed of owning a 1911 in 45 since I was a little guy. That said I do think I'll get the rifle first and save the 1911 for when I can buy a GOOD 1911 like kimber or a para
