I have a 20ga coey single shot. 28" barrel and fix full choke

I have just started hunting birds again. And in my area they tend to be in the worst of brush.
The 28" barrel seems to be a pain in the ass.

Think I could have it cut down to 18.5" but want a choke tube in it.

Anyone here ever do so?

Cheers

You will be reducing the value of an already modest shotgun. 18 1/2 inches is too short - unless threatened in a dark alley.
If you took the value of the Cooey, add the cost of such a modification - you could afford a better gun for hunting.
25 inch is about as short a barrel as desirable in a bird hunting gun.

What's a old coey worth? I don't care of the value I want to use it more. 90% of birds I see are on the ground. And it thick brush.

Why would a 18.5 or 20" barrel be no good for birds?

The problem is finding someone with the correct tooling to do the job. The tooling is expensive and hard to justify for a job that may only be requested once or twice in a year. The other thing is that Cooey barrels have a very thin wall and the tube is not always concentric. If you are determined to get a short 20 gauge and you can find someone with the tooling a better choice would be the Russian Baikal.

As for bird hunting with a short gun,,, I love mine!

Cut and thread a shotgun barrel? Guys used to this in my high school shop class. Any gun Smith would have no problem doing this. The function and if it's worth it ($) is up too you but I won't cost much to do most of the cost will probably be the choke itself.

Barrel concentricity is something to think about. I had a 18.5" remington barrel threaded to take remchokes, and it now shoots low and to the right, by a lot. It is a pain in the ass, because it doesnt shoot where it points anymore. Something to consider anyway.

You can bend the barrel

As skoal said, it’s an easy job and shouldn’t be too expensive. However if the barrel is too thin, there may not be enough material to thread it for choke tubes, the smith doing the work could quickly tell you. You could just cut it back and use it without a choke. My main camp gun has an 18 inch cylinder bore barrel and I have taken many grouse with it.

My grandpa bent his shotgun barrel by accident... he fell on it. He says it shoots better now because he likes that it shoots high

Just a thought, but why do you want choke tubes, maybe shoot the old 20g at what I assume will be a solid cylinder bore....once you trim it to 20”

It is a full choke. Works nice at taking heads and keeping pellets out of my food.

Cylinder bore might make that a harder task.
