Thinking of getting a Marlin 444 XLR

PLEASE REMOVE I'm thinking of getting a Marlin 444 XLR. I already own 5 Marlins in 30-30 and 45-70. I'd like some feedback from anyone who owns one of these new XLRs. I'm looking at scoping it with see through sights (as all my other Marlins have). I've heard about some barrel and loading/ejection problems? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.:)

Why buy a 444 when you already have a 45/70?

I couldn't imagine a worse set up for any rifle than see through mounts unless your neck is twice the normal length. A properly mounted scope should be as close to the bore as possible, esp with a lever action as they don't tend to have a high comb.

The rifle itself is beautiful. As for Supercub, I'll have to agree with him. See through mounts aren't usually my favorite either. In all your years, I'm sure you hardly ever relied on your factory sights. But, just to be different, why not consider a good peep sight?
 
I just bought one 2 weeks back. I'd like the trigger to be a little better but it fits like a glove. No range time yet, it won't be long!! Mine's going to be mounted with low rings and a Burris fixed 4 scope.
I had the pleasure of firing DW's same rifle and it printed amazing groups with the Leverevolution rounds.

I did find that if you find one, BUY IT, they don't last long. Got mine from Russell's in Calgary. They only had one left when I got mine. lots of 45-70's and even more 450's. Who knows why??

Probably for the same reason I have both calibre's. No real "just cause", in my case, "just cuz".:p
I agree with your comment on scope & mounts. Because of 'slightly' declining eye sight and for load testing I've mounted low power Leupold variables on both of mine. To mount them I opted for Weaver pivot mounts so if hunting and the need arises, I have quick access to the open sights. So far, that combo seems to work well.:)

The reason I use see through mounts on my Marlins is I've hunted for 47 years and have had a close encounter in thickbrush on Vancouver Island with a 565 pound black bear that came at me and I dropped it at 21 feet using the open sights and a 500 pound grizzly at 10 feet. When I hunt in areas where I could have a run in with something that can kill you I like the option of having the scope for long shots and the open sights for close range or thick brush. When hunting for deer or elk I use a regular set up. Why get a 444 ...well I have several 30-30s and 2 45-70s and had a Winchester 444 Timber Carbine that I gave to my son (would clover leaf shots at 100 yards), should have given him some tools for Christmas instead. One more never hurts.:)
