Thinking of going bolt action... Opinions?

I've always viewed the 444 as an interesting caliber rifle. I'm sure it's capable of taking down almost any north american animal within decent ranges. I'd keep it an hunt with it and see how things go.

Welcome to the west coast mikeystew.
Shoot what you know.
Old friends are hard to come by.
Don't stay out in the rain tooo long, you may just grow feathers or webbed feet.
That's all eye have to say about that.
Cheers and cut some tags.......
Regards.

Yes, you can also buy .444 FTX gummy tips for reloading, and soon the leverevoloution powder will be available allowing folks to make 'em at home. Although the FTX bullets do pretty well with Re7 and a couple other powders as it is, i think the factory rounds have about a 200fps advantage which would be nice to duplicate at home for extending the effective range of the rifle.

Would this put the point blank range (+- 3") of your rifle out to 200 yards? How much would you have to hold over at 250?

I've never taken it out that far but hypothetically if it hits 3" high at 100m it should be -1.5 at 200m and -18" at 300m with the leverevoloutions, so maybe an 8" hold over at 250m. i think the next logical step will be a small fixed power scope.

I have a Savage 99C in 308 that is going into the bush in a couple of days. Carries like a Winchester 94 and lots of range/thump. Also have several bolt actions like 30-06 just in case.

Just remember that they have big bears on Vancouver Island so if you decide to sell off your 444 get something to replace it that will also be able to handle the bears I'd go with 270 Win/280 Rem/30-06...

if I lived on Van Island I'd probably keep the .444 and buy a .260/.243 bolt gun with a 2-7x33 scope. covers the terrain and available animals nicely.

I think that guys that stick with iron sights in thick cover handicap themselves. If that is your hting, then great.

I have switched to a red dot for these conditions...as my eyes getting older and it's hard to beat a glowing red dot on a deer. :D

Thanks guy:). It's not perfect but it works for me. The two main changes as of late, in an 'attempt' to tidy things up, make more room and for easier access;
1/ My cast bullets only in the shelves of my reloading bench and a separate set of shelves for jacketed, especially with my accumulation of Barnes bullets as of late.
2/ Besides my bench and on the other side of the room, not visable, I've picked a 'bunch' of Wal-mart stackable plastic trays to store all my different brass. :redface:twenty-eight in all but three are empty, ;)spares:p.
