Hey everyone!

I was in CT today and they have a crate of Mosins and a bunch of surplus ammo. The rifles are going for $199. I looked at 2 and the bores were really dirty/dark (a good cleaning may fix that) but otherwise seemed alright (if not dirty). Any advice on if this would be a could deal? I'm pretty sure they'll let me look at the crate and pick whichever one I want- anything specific I should be looking for?

Yes to buying one but you should check with some of your local independent stores or one of the online store that sponsors this site before buying at CT. $199 is about right for retail so @ that price you are really not getting any sort of a deal IMHO.

Some of the CT stores have had outstanding shipments of 91/30's. I would look for something all matching (probably force matched) with a good bore/rifling. The pre/post war stocks have nicer escutcheons, but the wartime models may have some character. If you are not inclined to do some work on it, find a nice smooth cycling bolt.

You should buy one!

I ALWAYS do a reverse bullet check with Hornady .308 and .312 projectiles.

I have picked out just 4 from 50+ at two CT's. I also check the trigger and make sure the bolt does not move when the hammer drops.

I have found the 1937-1939's to be the nicest.

That is very easy to fix. And as far as dark bores.....many of them are not nearly as bad they look at first.

I picked through about 50 or so at CT and took a '43 Tula all matching serial wise, but you see some bolt part's being izzy. Seems to be less of the '42 Tula's around here anyway. Of course the possibly matching bayonet belonging to it was already gone, they were just all dumped in a box and given out indiscriminately on each sale apparently. Consequently I had to hand lap and fit the non-matching bayo I received. Not to bad for 169 I guess. Strong rifling on an original '43 barrel, but dark in the grooves and no amount of love has done much to change that. I would have to say possibly the least accurate milsurp I've ever owned. I'll try MFS 185gr heavy ball next time out, it doesn't group well with Bulgarian light ball.
It would shoot about 8" tp 10" high at 50 yards with no bayonet and the rear sight bottomed out. I knew these were designed like most battle rifles to be zeroed with the bayonet attached, at 100meters, it printed point of aim of my 6 o'clock hold with the old bayonet hanging on the front, and shot point of aim at 200 with sight moved to 200. Groups were not good however. I'm thinking the heavy ball will do better tomorrow maybe.:canadaFlag:

That has been our experience as well for the most part. We have a couple that are pretty washed out but I have cleaned up some bores that came out in nice shape after a liberal, pardon the pun, dose of elbow grease.
