Thinking of purchasing a S&W MP 22 - thoughts, comments

A buddy of mine had a MP22 for plinking, sold it and got a GSG 1911 .22, it eats everything. I bought a Sig Mosquito and it only likes CCI MiniMags :( Next .22 I buy will be a GSG 1911 .22 as they eat all forms of ammo that we can get up here.

I just ordered one as I thought it would be a great training companion to my M&P9. Much cheaper to shoot, though its internals are a bit different(hammer fired vs. striker fired for instance) and it doesn't have interchangable grips like the ceterfire models do.

It's a pretty good gun. A friend bought one a little while ago. I didn't get to shoot it much but we did try 3 or 4 brands of ammo. It ran on all of them. I liked it well enough.

I own one and its a great pistol. Its actually made by Walther in Germany, so it has a great fit and finish. Have used Remington yellow jackets, Winchester M22s and CCI Stingers (round nose 40 grain) and no FTF, FTEs, probably 150 of each through it in round numbers. My brother in law has an M&P in .40 S&W and its got some issues (lets leave it at that, dont want to start that thread...), so much so that it made me second guess buying the M&P 22. I was leaning to the Walther P22, but it was too small of a pistol for my hands, it felt like a toy to me. When I found the M&P was a German gun, I tried one at the range and I was sold. Owned it for 4 months now and the romance is still alive. I say go for it.

Have one. Love it. Perfect for the days when your wallet hurts and you just want to get to the range.
I imagine the GSG 1911 .22 works the same way.

If you can, try holding both and getting a feel for it at a dealership before making your decision. That's what I did.

I was all for the M&P, wanted one in the worst way. When i started looking for mags for it, i slowly was turned off. Ive searched/emailed all over the country trying to find mags. I went so far as the check the Smith and Wesson website outta the states and even they are out of stock! I'm leaning towards gsg 1911 because at least you can find mags, shooting with only one mag aint fun!!

I like mine, could use some better sights though. I was lucky and was able to get 3 extra mags when I got the gun so I'm all set, the biggest downfall at the moment is the lack of extra mags. But mine has been very reliable.

I jazzed up the sights on mine to make them a little better:

Rear white dot sight from a FS M&P will go on the M&P22. I got mine from Brownell's for $16.99. Mags, you just need to backorder them from Brownell's and wait. I got 10 brand new ones downstairs.

Thanks everyone - Well Santa got me one for Christmas along with an extra mag. I actually get the pistol tomorrow, can't wait to get my hands on the thing.

I searched here 1.5 mths ago and Irunguns secured hundreds in stock.
They were already in Canada so just paid shipping. Sold out now though.

I really like mine, very nice to shoot. Mags are a little hard to get, ordered 3 extra a month and a half ago and still patiently waiting. GSG's are a great little pistol as well, mags are readily available. I found that the m&p was more accurate than the gsg. (Shot multiple gsg and m&p before purchasing). M&P is a little more expensive and mags are hard to get but is a better shooter for me. Best thing to do is handle and if possible shoot before making your decision. Different strokes for different folks and if money not an option, buy both you can't go wrong with that choice.

Just picked one up today. Great feel. Very similar to my m&p 9mm. Shot 100 mini mags and 50 stingers. No issues. Fun little gun, glad I purchased it. Sights are not 3 dot like the others in the line.
