I'm thinking of selling my M1a,bought it 3 years ago from a estate sale. The serial number puts date of manufacture 1980,the rifle is pristine i never shot it and it doesn't look like the older gentleman that owned it fired it much if at all.My question is what it would be worth,1 5rd mag 1 20/5 mag walnut stock and what i beleive to be a garand rear sight and maybe a front target sight not sure, also comes with springfield manual and front sight protector.Any info would be greatly appreciated thanks.

According to the 2007 Blue Book of Gun Values:

The standard/basic model in 100% condition is worth $1285 US dollars. Chances are that value has risen 10% to 20% in the past couple years.

There are also National Match, Super Match, M1A Loaded Standard, Gold Series, Scout Squad and SOCOM models. There are also various calibers and barrel lengths involved with .308 caliber as standard. Also, stainless steel versus regular barrels make a difference in value.

In summary, it should be worth somewhere between $1500 and $2000 depending on condition.

Expect to be asked for more specific information before anyone can give you a clearer idea on value.

"...maybe a front target..." Measure the width. .062" is a Match front sight.
"...would be worth..." The model matters. Any glass bedding? Marking that indicate anything but a stock barrel?
Hard to tell what a used one runs these days. They don't last long enough in the shops for them to make it to web sites. A new Standard runs around $2500.
I'd guess you'd easily get 2 grand. Maybe a bit more in Timmins. Not likely many M1A's up there. You won't get that kind of money from a gun shop though.
"...Blue Book of Gun Values..." Reflects an average of prices from all over the U.S. Has nothing to do with Canadian prices.

With that date, you should also look for USGI parts. Many consider those to be more desireable than the Springfield Inc stuff made after. Take a look at the bolt on that rifle. That is about the time that some of the cast bolts were being made and are still subject to a recall from Springfield (I have a thread about my rifle going back). Here is some info I found which proved to be correct:

"Springfield Armory, Inc. issued a recall of M1A bolts in 1987. The recall applies to M1A bolts marked as follows: 1) no numerical or alphabetical characteristics on either the top or back of the bolt (completely unmarked) 2) any bolt with any numerical or alphabetical markings at all on the back of the bolt 3) any bolt with the top marked 7790185 and with SA RRR centered below that number 4) any bolt with the top marked 790185 and with SA centered below that number. If the reader has such a bolt, contact the Customer Service Department at Springfield Armory, Inc. politely discuss your situation with the Customer Service Representative. Springfield Armory, Inc. still honors this recall if applicable to the part concerned."

Maybe none whatsoever....Not a lot of demand for 12 pound 2000$ 7.62 NATO semis up here but you never know. I wouldnt' mind a non-clone if they werent' so scarce/expensive in Canada.

Use to have an M-305 and sold it to a local guy who decided to take up reloading and nearly blew himself and the gun to pieces later on......maybe he's looking for another ?
