I plan on buying quite a few red rifles and was thinking on building a locked storage room for rifles. Maybe under the basement stairs. Build it in and have the rifles locked up. Is it best to store these red rifles standing vertical or hang them on the wall horizontal? Anybody built one of these? I have seen hooks with felt on them not to scratch the rifle. I thought it would be better than having them all jammed in a little gun safe. Since its in a basement, in case the water tank blows up I will store them up a height. I don't want to just lean them against a wall.

Any ideas on how I should hang them.

Never built a gun room, but here's my take: For storage, I think standing vertical on the butt. For display, I think horizontal on hooks.

Guessing you have insurance, so unless you've got really rare stuff I wouldn't worry too much about water damage. Even so, maybe just elevate the vertical rack a foot off the floor.

If you are building this in the basement you need to worry about humidity. Our basement is always very humid. I have a dehumidifier running 24/7.

It doesnt matter how you store them it is all the same

Goodluck

i'm in the very early stages of doin exactly what the OP is thinking of.....perfect closet space under the stairs, pretty much useless for anything else. i have only run electrical so far, but have a vision in mind that shouldn't be too expensive or involved. it's barebones studs so i get to start from scratch. just some basic carpentry and electrical. i even have a spare dehumidifier i can keep close by. the only major expense will be swapping the folding door for a decent steel one. once it's done i'll post some before/after pics.

here is my update with a few pics.......was a basic under stairs closet when i started. added 2 power outlets, a flourescent light & my dehumidifier, got some 1x4's, mounted those to the wall. then added some hooks from Home Depot, put pipe insulation 90 degrees on them, then used 5/8 ths dowel for the barrel ends and covered the dowel with pipe insulation as well. it's not a masterpiece but it's effective and will be perfect to free up some safe space with my ever growing .22 collection. there's a steel door with lock coming soon.

please note: rifles are only there to demonstrate, they're back in the safe until the steel door is installed.

cheers

What are the regulations on a locked gun room? What is the minimum for a door and walls to keep people out. I plan on keeping trigger locks on them and could put a cable through them to keep them on the wall.

there's a few threads on here about this stuff. if you do a search for "firearms storage" you'll find the info you are requesting.

Do it.......but......do it right.

There are many things to consider to build a proper gun room.
