When it comes to how to place them on the wall, I suggest vertical, since it is very space efficient. I always store long guns muzzle down. As you can see, this allows the scope to hang facing the wall. the center of gravity is such that the guns stays put. My walls take two rows of vertical rifles, so a lot of guns can be stored in a small space.
Why muzzle down? Active guns have solvent in the bore. Collector guns have oil in the bore. I don't want gunk migrating down the barrel into the action/trigger/bedding. By storing the guns muzzle down, the gunk migrates to the muzzle. It sits on a folded cleaning patch.
