thinking on building an ar

Have you looked into a Norinco AR.... You could buy it, take it all apart and reasonable it following online videos etc. Learn a good base and build from there.

Questar has a lot of parts. Can ammo has some Norinco lowers complete for $199...

I'm not sure how this can be done while obeying the laws of our masters, you need an rpal to legally own an ar15 in Canada, whether you build it or you buy it or you get it for free, you need an rpal and you need to have it registeted.

It is criminally illegal to be in posession of an AR15 without the proper license and registration. You risk a firearms prohibition, and mandatory serious jail time where your anus will be forcefully dilated.

This question has been asked many times before...build or buy your first.
My advice is to scour the EE and find something in your price range. Buy it, shoot it, take it apart and put it back together. Learn the gun. Then if you still like ARs, figure out what you liked or didn't like about the one you bought, keep the parts you want and build the parts you want.
If you are not too mechanically inclined, or not rich, or can't spend hours looking for good deals and waiting for packages, I would not build an AR as your first go. A complete gun gets you shooting quicker, is most likely cheaper and probably has better resale value.
 
If you do a complete build you don't know if it will function until it's done 100%.... It's a lot easier to have a complete lower build the upper the way you like.... Fire it.... Then build a lower as you have a working rifle.... As you wait for some part that take 4-8 weeks to come in etc....

What are you looking to get out of your AR? How are you looking to use it? Long range? CQB? Plinking? Wall hanging?

Give us something to work with to help point you in the right direction. What you ask is akin to going on a car forum and saying "I want to build a car, where can I find some good parts and manuals?"

As Fenceline asked, you need to tell us more info. I already recommended buying one as your first but if you insist on building, you need to give more...the AR is probably the most customizable black rifle platform available in Canada. You need to have a clear picture of what you want or you may end up with parts you don't need or want.
