Hey everyone, I'm relatively new to shooting, and after spending a while with my 10/22 i'm thinking of moving up to a centerfire... I've always wanted a 700, but there's so many models... I'm mainly looking at the SPS Tactical and the new VTR, but open to suggestions!

Thanks!

Not really a black rifle, but what's the purpose? Target, varmint, etc. If you have to go Rem 700, there is also the LTR, XCR Tac, 5R. Look at the CZ 527 as well.

I had a R700 SPS tact in .308 and it wasn't bad. Wasn't great, but it did the trick.

If you do get one of the SPS' with the Houge overmoulded stock, replace it ASAP. The stock is great to get a grip on, and feel good, but it is incredibly soft and floppy. The rest of the rifle was good, but that stock needed to go away! Ended up selling the rifle, and got in on the Savage 10TR LEO/MIL deal. That rifle should be here next week! :D

It wuld help to know your budget range if you can.

I have a 5R in .223 and really like it. Replaced the stock with a choate tactial custom and CDI DBM. It's a little heavy so if you're walking the bush it might not be the best choice, but for target it's a winner imho.

You're asking about bolt guns in the black rifle forum.

You could try the precision rifle forum where 99% of the Remington 700 questions have been asked and answered.

My SPS TAC is an awesome gun, that said I do reload for it and have been fortunate to find the combination it likes to shoot and it is crazy accurate! I went with a Vortex scope 4-16x50 PST and have since switched out the stock to an AI and a Timney trigger.I guess my point is that I would say to go for it, they're a great little gun that can be upgraded as your budget allows.

The only concern that I've had with the R700s in 223 is that they are not available in fast twist barrels. So if you are hoping to use heavier bullets e.g. 69 grain and up, these rifles are unlikely to work for you.

Well you are off to a good start, I cannot think of a better starter .22 than the Ruger 10/22. You can turn that thing into a fire breathing tactical assault rimfire or a handy rimfire precision rig or even a good ol' gopher gun!

The 700 SPS is exactly the same. Mine was in .308 and shot about 1.2~1.5" groups at 100 yards straight out of the box. I pulled the barrel off and threw it in the garbage and had Terry at Black Art Rifles put on a Shilen match barrel - and now she shoots around .75" groups at 100 with that wonderful (but floppy) rubber stock! If I was inclined to I would throw away the stock and get a custom like the cool kids. As it stands, it is good enough for a Truck/ATV/Bush gun that gets used and abused by the noobs and Yours Truly on a regular basis. As you can see from Stralia above - you can turn that thing into a sniper gun that will put them all in one hole - but it will cost you! $$$$Ka-Ching!!!$$$$

These guns are especially suited for the noobs that are starting out on a budget and can grow with you as you get deeper into the sport. Check out the gun geeks over on the precision rifle forum here because they know the SPS forwards, backwards and upside down. If I recall correctly they also like one of the entry level Savage bolt guns too and will pimp them out extensively as Stralia has done. Those guys over there are the ultimate authorities on tack driving bolt guns and are well worth your time to listen to.
