third world corrosion..?

Ok, I got an answer from bbc news today. They were showing the gear from the latest group of somali pirates the french navy captured. I have never seen such nasty rust on ak47s in my life! Seriously! I dare you to shoot at me, it will either hit me (small chance), hit one of your buddies (better chance), or blow up in your face (best chance). The safest place is directly in front of the shooter.

I have a friend who, as well as 3 other family members, use an SKS for hunting deer in the Cariboo. They have had the gun for about 10 years. They said they like it because they can get cheap ammo and all family members can shoot it because it is light and short and fairlly accurate. They have shot several crates of surplus corrosive through it for practice as well as some hunting ammo.

I made that comment that it must be a pain to have to clean it all the time because of the corrosive ammo. They all looked at me oddly and said they never cleaned it because it shoots good and they don't want to spoil it by cleaning (other than lubing the action). Then Dad said, "What is corrosive ammo anyways?" I explained it but they were totally mystified because they had put crates of the stuff through it and hadn't noticed any problems. They figured that the ammo they bought in the green wooden crates couldn't be the same stuff I was talking about.

So maybe 5440fight is right after all . . .
