This gun appears well travelled!

SS, if thinking that it the hole went through to the chamber makes you an idiot then I'm one too. At first sight I thought it might be a pressure testing device. Maybe put a lead pill in and measure how much it compressed on firing to measure lead units of pressure, though I couldn't see them putting one on this gun. It doesn't go through to the chamber though. I haven't had the chance to shoot the Elsie yet. My father picked it up in Winnipeg after I bought it online. He is holding on to it until I make it down there. I plan to try it on waterfowl and clays as soon as I get a chance. It projects a circle and aiming dot onto the glass. It caused a big debate when it came out in 1947. Traditionalists in the ATA wanted it banned.
SS and Sharptail, if you went to the Strathcona range we may have met. I live in northern Alberta and stopped there whenever I got the chance. I'd be the guy that usually had a couple of old Parkers, Elsies, English guns or a Fox with me and bang away several rounds. I also shoot a Beretta trap gun. If you want to give the Elsie or one of the others a try we could meet up in Edmonton and you could shoot a few rounds with her. Same to you, Grouse Man, when I make it to Winnipeg I plan to get out to the Winnipeg trap club at least a few times. Ahsan, I don't know where you live, but you and other CGNers would be welcome. I'd be interested in seeing some other classic guns too.
 
North58 - I must agree that you have some fascinating collection pieces despite the marked oddities :)......no offense, I'm just making a positive remark.

I wonder how accurate that Nyder sighting mechanism may be......I get the feeling if those bbls are well regulated alongwith the sight (if that was possible) then chances are one won't miss much provided gun fit was proper :D

North, from your description I am pretty sure I have seen you at Strathcona. Next time you are down this way, drop me a P.M. Bring a double or two, and we can go play at the sporting clays range.

Likewise. I would greatly appreciate an opportunity to see and touch one or both of the Riley and your Elsie. Sharptail and I can return the favour by bringing some of our more unusual pieces along. We may have a hard time finding a suitable range, though. With the closing of Strathcona, our options are somewhat limited. The Edmonton Gun Club is open only on Wednesday nights (?!!?) and the Strathcona Fish & Game doesn't allow guests. I don't know what the rules are on guests out in Spruce Grove.

Sharptail is a member out at Beaverhill. Perhaps he'll take chances with his reputation and take us out there. If you have advance notice of when you are coming to Edmonton and will have time to get together, that would help us work around the range question and trips to the covert.

Some real interesting pieces on this thread, kind of a old gun show and tell.

Love seeing some of the patents of years ago, would I add one to one of mine...NEVER, but if I came across a double with one of these attached already I would have to buy it.

Love reading ads from old magazines and books describing some of the off the wall ideas of yesteryear.
