He may get away with it for while,but you can only get lucky so many times with a pea shooter against big game that can eat you.
Maybe this guy is related to Timmie (The Tidbit) Treadwell.........
 
My brother is an arctic archaeologist - he tells a story of a very old inuit man who told him that when he was young his father gave him a very powerfull weapon. One that would kill Polar Bears and Cariboo, etc...When asked what the weapon was he brought out an old and worn single shot 22lr.

I never had a single failure to fire in over 600 rounds on my xcr. I would trust my life to it against a bear or anything else for that matter. It wouldn't be my first choice (I really wanna .308) but it is good enough for me.

600 rds under what conditions?? That is not enough shooting to be statistically significant. 1000 rds in a day or two under field conditions would be a far better indicator of reliability.

I'm just saying...
 
There are people who claim with 8000+ rounds without failure to fire on xcrforum.com. I think that if your rifle manages that you could trust it. Mine has about 1200 through it without failure. :)

Interesting! about 30 years ago, I did exactly the same thing on a very large black that was being a nuisance around the cabin. He was a bit larger, tipping the scales at 407 lbs, but One shot from that Swift with a 52 grain Sierra, and the inside of his skull turned to mush instantly. I'm not advocating the Swift as a Bear rifle, just stating what I did one time only. Prefer larger chamberings for any bear. Regards, Eagleye

I'm lookin' more at the load than the rifle. I don't know that I would wanna use .223 for bears in any rifle. It's not the bear you're hunting that worries me... the one eating berries or drinking water at 150yds, it's the one you didn't even know was there that comes blasting out of the bushes 20 or 30 feet away that worries me. It's hard getting good "Shot Placement" when a bear scares the crap out of you and is running full speed from 20' away.

Just to play devils advocate, but wouldnt it be better to have 10 rounds of 5.56mm on hand;) 10 rounds, fast follow up shots, im just sayin:D

Personally for black bear hunting this fall im rolling with my Enfield Jungle Carbine.
