This is going to be a different season

With gas prices what they are I will have my arse on a stand for the most part of the season. This is relatively new to me and I've been putting a few miles on my boots the last month scouting on crown land. It has been a blast. I've got about a half dozen sites staked out with deer moving everywhere.

I sat in my stand tonight with no bow or gun just to watch and a nice big does snuck her way through. In BP season she will be sausage. There are piles of last years scape lines around and I can't wait for the rut.

Don't care if I fill a tag I'm having too much fun with things now.

Looking forward to seeing all the pics on the board this fall. Probably won't have one of my own to post but this may be the best season yet. Great thing about it is that this is near a major city and not a sole has been in my area. You'll never know what you find when you walk off the trails and roads.

Cheers and good luck

Well I learned from complaining on here about road hunters, and it seems it usually hurts their feelings. I won't bash it, but I never did see the fun or 'sport' in it. I have put many miles on vehicles looking at new spots durimg the off season, but for me the fun comes from putting on your boots and wandering around. It still scares the s**t right out of me when you practically step on a grouse and they blow up at your feet just before sunrise while your watching for deer. And I love finding a good looking spot, not to hunt but to look. I can waste several hours of good 'hunting' time with my back against a tree watching squirrels chase each other around, or moose walking through a pond. You just see so much more when your mobile, not confined to a single stand, and that's what makes it fun at least for me. It should be a good Fall for everyone I think. :)

Couldn't say it better myself! Some of my most memorable hunts were ones where I never fired a shot.
The cow moose that came to the slough I was watching, then fed on lily pad roots. Looked like no bull ws coming, so tried to see how close I could get to the cow. When she put her head in the water I would sneak up a bit. The big ears would wiggle and her head slowly rise. I would crunch down into a lump on the smooth, grassy slope. She would turn her head and look right at me, with no sign of recognition. Then, she would turn her head back and into the water, when I would do it all over again.
This procedure kept up until I was but 30 yards from her! When her head was in the water she could feel me moving on the open, grassy slope, but stare as she did at me, she couldn't see that my crunched up form was anything but a stump.
Another myth was exploded that sunny September evening. How many times have you heard, or read, that beavers slap their tail on the water to warn moose, or other game, that a hunter is approaching and the game animal will take off? Well, two beavers spotted me as soon as I got in the open. They slapped their big, flat tails on the water, constantly, for the half hour the episode of sneaking up on the moose lasted.
The old cow moose paid absolutely no attention to them!
