This might annoy the purists

I just got back from the range where I was testing out my new Tech Sight on my latest SKS. The sights work great and will be even better when I get a fibre optic front post.

So I took my latest gun, along with my first one which is mounted in an ATI folding stock, as both needed to be sighted in. This was the first time I've shot them head to head and I realized something. The SKS factory stock really, really sucks.

When you buy an SKS you basically get some excellent components all packed together in a greasy, uncomfortable piece of wood, which is suitable only to keep the parts from getting lost until you can purchase a real stock. The factory stock wouldn't even make good fire wood as I can't imagine what kind of fumes cosmoline might put off.

So I will be mounting my latest purchase in a functional, clean, new, tactical stock. Haven't picked one out yet, but I'm sure the purists will chime in with a few suggestions on what I might do with the old one.

Consider me annoyed. If the stock worked for the Vietcong and countless other irregulars, it's clearly suitable for more than "keeping the parts from getting lost until you can purchase a 'real' stock." I don't care what you do with your SKS, but seriously, that comment is ridiculous.

Also I've never noticed any cosmoline fumes from my SKS stocks. This is likely because I, you know, removed the cosmoline from the stock before taking it to the range.

All those goofs are trolling you with NC star comments. Unless you have a collectible SKS, nobody short of groggy fudds with superiority complexes over keeping the virgin purity on a mass made, sub $200 carbine will care. Its a fricken SKS, who really gives a damn what you do to it... do whatever you please with it. It's like people getting angry over a customizing a civic....really who gives a damn, they are a dime a dozen these days, why even waste your breath mocking such a thing anymore. Hell buy a whole crate for pocket change if you wanted. Again, its an SKS which are as common as civics in this country. They are a fine workable gun. If you want to spend cash on stuff, go for it, its not like you defaced somethign rare or special that should offend the masses.

Tech sights rock :p This groups is @ 50y in the standing position.

I actually like the Russian arctic birch the best. Its very lightweight. The LOP works great unless you're standing sideways to the target like some pompaus fudd.

Shooting is a thing of personal choices, you should know that i had more fun bubbaing my grandson Karl Mossberg Zombies rifle than shooting my Nemesis or my Custom Creedmoor, peoples talk, often only to listen themselfs talk... But at the end you decide... Dont let nobody say you otherwise... JP.

Its your rifle, do what you want, if it was me I wouldn't do anything permanent to it, so I could return it to original easily.

I think it's just the title of the thread they are responding to, there is nothing wrong with the rifle. The mods are practical, and the rifle still has class. No plastic gimmicks or ####ty nc star scopes to be seen.

Purists are funny. They think plastic is bad as they sit at thier plastic computer, typing on a plastic keyboard. If plastic would have been common in manufacturing when the SKS was built, the Russians would have used it.

I was thinking that I should have added somewhere in the original post that my view on the factory stock was my opinion. But really, can anyone honestly tell me that the factory stock is nice to shoot? Maybe if you have 12 inch arms.
