well so far this season i have ben out 9 times counting todays closer
and have seen sweet pluck all outside of old trails and new gut piles
why is it that every other hunter in the bush can tag out when they show up for an hour and i spend from before light till dusk and cannot find a bloody thing
what a waste of time and money this season has turned out to be can anyone tell me why i moved to this stupid province ? theres no damn deer or bear here

May not make a lot of sense to hang around new gut piles... Any that's still around likely have a good idea what they are... and are probably making themselves scarce. They ain't bright, but they're not THAT dumb... LOL! Besides, they've all moved to southern Ontario.

Well - The concensus here in Bancroft was that there were a lot of deer seen, and harvested. Even the relatively recreational hunters managed to put something in the freezer.
Given the late season, the rut was well established. A good number of large bucks were taken. However, the extreme weather seemed to have its effect on deer habits - particularly those extremely windy days. You'd have to step on an animal to get it to move...
This may have been a consideration for your hunt. Alternatively, you may have faced the challenges of still hunting on public land near a large urban centre. Deer were taken in the proximity as established by gutpiles.... Who knows how heavily hunted your locale was?
Suggest you give consideration to joining a local camp. Most of the established camps are facing the problem of ageing membership, and would welcome some new blood. The small cost of time and expense is easily justified by the peace of mind that you are hunting on land that is yours. Additionally, you can participate in drives which are generally more productive/exciting than still hunting. Perhaps someone on this board could help you out?

As far as gut piles scaring deer away that is purely speculative.
Deer cannot reason and do not understand mortality!
A fresh gutpile actually puts a lot of deer scent in the area and can be a good attractant for immature bucks.
The only down side to a gutpile is the predators that they attract... but even coyotes chasing deer can be a good thing sometimes...
I have shot a number of deer in and around gut piles and believe me... they don't know what they mean!

any ottawa local camps looking for a new guy ? pm me

Passed up on a lot of smaller bucks this year so it looks like tag-burgers tonite. Don't fret, just getting out is 90% of the game, better luck next year to you.

SignGuy... I have had VERY little success with deer when I am on the ground... I guess I suck at sneaking... I now hunt exclusively from a treestand and always seem to see and get my deer... This year I was out 5 times for deer, and got a 7point buck in the first 15 mins of being in my treestand on the 5th morning...

Cheers
Jay
