This year has been my best year for deer hunting by far. I started in September in the green belt and hunted there for September and October. I tagged out with my open white tail tags, filling my 2 supplemental tags and my general tag by the end of October. All 3 deer were nice freezer fillers but that's about it.
Came November I still had 2 more draw tags to fill, one antlerless mule deer and one antlered. I filled my antlerless tag last week with another freezer filler, the 4th one of the season. I had well over 100 lbs of meat in the freezer at that point.
Now came the time for the antlered mule deer tag. I had been chasing 3 nice bucks on my permissions down South. A big 10 pointer, a medium 8 pointer and a smaller 6 pointer. They handed me my own behind at every opportunity as I couldn't seem to get any closer than 300 yards without getting burned, usually by a doe on the lookout. Although 300 yards is definitely doable in .308, when taking in consideration elevation changes and strong winds I just wasn't close enough for my own liking.
I thought a Tikka T3X chambered in the faster and flatter shooting 7mm Remington Magnum was the answer, it will be getting here this week hopefully, but I won't be finding out this year...
This morning I finally got a break. Right after legal hunting time I spotted the "medium" buck from the road in a brush pile. I was able to get out of my truck undetected and made it under the fence the same way. By that time I was less than 50 yards away and got spotted by 2 does trailing him. He started walking away from me but wasn't alarmed. I had no shot at first until he quartered slightly to the left. I landed the perfect shot right behind his rib cage which exited through his chest. It missed all the meat quarters as well as the bowels. He went about 20 yards and collapsed.
I took all my deer with .308 rifles loaded with Nosler Accubond bullets, both in 165 gr and 150 gr variety. The harvest count is as follows:
- Stag 10: 1
- Remington 700 LTR: 1
- Remington 7 KUIU: 3
Below is a photo. I wish I had taken better picture, but it'll do. To the experts, is this an 8 point buck or do the little spikes near the brow make it a 10? This was a big bodied deer compared to the antlers, I'm estimating over 250 lbs from hoisting him up in the garage. This will bring my meat total for the year to well over 200 lbs.
Now what am I going to do with that T3X when it comes in? I think I'm going to try to fill my general elk tag next...
Cheers!
