I was there, it was fantastic!

Also, file that range design under ranges that would not be approved in Canada!

I know what you mean.
CFO's want to see Canadian ranges over designed enough to make it safe even if police officers use it.
That is a really demanding standard. :)

Seriously, they are killing serious target shooters capability of practicing three position rifle shooting in most ranges across the country.

Always shoot from a bench?
Thats like like training wheels on a Harley!

Never mind the Zero horizon pistol restrictions as in Quebec.

Mikerock, heard of any accidents?

Of the 6 ranges I shot at while I was over there, only 2 of them would have been allowed in Canada.

You can see it in the video a little bit, but behind the backstop was the highway that went back from Raron (where the range was) to Visp (where everyone was staying.) Our club went to a practise day at a club down the valley called Brig, and it was a 300m range on the side of a mountain with a highway tunnel entrance (the same highway that ran behind Schützenfest) right above the targets. They had baffles that were about 20m in front of the shooting positions that would stop any errant shots and you could only see the targets from the shooting bays, but when you went outside you could see the tunnel and highway with cars driving on it and targets just below the road. Crazy!

I went to a small club near Winterthur called Truttikon that was shooting over farmer's grain fields. They would set up chains and red flags so that no-one would drive across the roads and into the line of fire.

Totally different shooting experience over there. There is a higher level of trust, but there is also more exposure to firearms than we see here.

Edit: Speaking of different shooting experience - in that picture I posted earlier, you can see the Feldschlösschen beer wagon which was giving away free beer on the way into Schützenfest.

No accidents that I heard about, Diopter!

Fantastic, I have wanted to go to one of these events but I either can't find the time nor the extra funds to hop the pond and visit.

Can anyone show up to these events or do you have to register or be sponsored in advance ?

Edit: I just took the time to watch the first video...can you imagine someone calling a cease fire ? How do the targets get changed with all those shooters ?

The second video brought a tear to my eye, I truly wish we had a similar event here. The setup process makes my local range insignificant now ;).

To shoot, have to be a member of a Swiss Rifle club somewhere in the world.
They have to vouch for you and pre-register you.

For these shooting events, they have to add temporary ranges along with existing full-time facilities to handle the volume.

Mike Rock that is awesome that you were able to go!
I did not make it home this time but will be there 2017 if all goes well.

They don't change the targets.
They are all electronic for the major shoots.
No one in the butts, no need.
Greatly speeds up the process for 300m shooting

Sensor hear the shot fired at a position say target #101.
It then expects a shot on target #101 within the flight time of the bullet.
If it doe not detect a bullet at target then, it's a crossfire and not counted on victim shooter's target but firing shooter get 0.
Sound sensors on target triangulate the actual travel of the bullet and give the exact score.
Monitors on shooting positions show the shooter their trial shots and score string with shot position using arrows.

I see, thank you for explaining the process. I take it there are qualifying shoots at the associated club for a member to become recommended and/or sponsored for the grand shooting event ?

That is incredible, it makes any range I have been too look obsolete and backward. I guess I shouldn't bring some man targets and my staple gun along, eh ? :)

No qualifying needed. So long as you are not a safety hazard or make it difficult for your fellow members to get along with you.
No one needs a complainer along.
Everyone pays their own expenses, but the clubs usually help out finding accommodations. just don't expect 5 stars, more like hostels or friends places. Hospitality is top notch over there for fellow shooters.

what is used as a backstop? I saw some hoarding going up but nothing that looked like a backstop.

The mountain's earth. Those "boards" are to prevent ricochets or rock fragments hitting the target frames.
Never saw a .30 or 5.56mm caliber bullets ricochet travel 300m back to shooter

Nope, too poor, and too busy at work.
4 of our Montreal club members went, but they did miserably.
Too old or too inexperienced.

Been to your BC club back in 2005 or 2006 for the October Schützenfest.
Need to get rid of some debt to afford the trip again.

I see Rene is still president.
