Zero Horizon means Shooter cannot see sky from shooting position. Baffles are used to make accidental discharges and jerked off shots will hit the baffles or butt.

The Goofle Earth viewer gives a more impressive view than the videos. Except for this one valley, there isn't any flat land in the area. The run way is logically a very good place to build a range. Tents, fences, hoarding and parking spaces on land that is probably government or military controlled. There are several things in that valley - the Rhone River, a shipping canal, a main road, agricultural land, a sizeable quarry and a three-track railway, all between two reasonably good sized towns. Try getting the Bugtussel Town Council to green-light a shoot like this?

Oh yeah, it was also the 200th anniversary of the Wallis Canton joining the Swiss Confederation (they are latecomers) and they had a HUGE party in Visp that had the whole town come out. Never seen anything like it, an old town awash with partying people. Small bars that used to be dungeons (don't go through there it's a trap door), and the influx of people from around Switzerland and the Auslandschweizer clubs.

Next morning there was a parade through Visp that had more people in the parade then lived in the town! Lots of re-enactor groups, and shooting clubs. One of the best experiences of my life for sure.

Test photo I took today with my iphone of my Luger, which I used at Schützenfest.

Yes, it was pretty easy compared to bringing guns into the US. The Swiss customs agent made a comment about how it was coming home when I brought it in.

They don't change the targets.
They are all electronic for the major shoots.
No one in the butts, no need.
Greatly speeds up the process for 300m shooting

Sensor hear the shot fired at a position say target #101.
It then expects a shot on target #101 within the flight time of the bullet.
If it doe not detect a bullet at target then, it's a crossfire and not counted on victim shooter's target but firing shooter get 0.
Sound sensors on target triangulate the actual travel of the bullet and give the exact score.
Monitors on shooting positions show the shooter their trial shots and score string with shot position using arrows.

Ain't it amazing what a country that values its shooters can do ? ;)

Grizz

I know what you mean.
CFO's want to see Canadian ranges over designed enough to make it safe even if police officers use it.
That is a really demanding standard. :)

Seriously, they are killing serious target shooters capability of practicing three position rifle shooting in most ranges across the country.
Always shoot from a bench?
Thats like like training wheels on a Harley!
Mikerock, heard of any accidents?

At our club, nobody shoots from prone or sitting these days - except me.

Just got back from the range with my Shiloh 45-70 Business Rifle and 100% BP loads using 500 gr bullets. I wanted to try out a new set of prone x-stix I just made up as I find that sitting with x-stix doesn't work well for me.
I had to make a slight sight adjustment in elevation with the vernier tang and then put three rds into 4" at 200m. It was so cloudy that it was almost dark, making it difficult to see bullet holes at 300m through the spotting sope, so that will have to wait for a sunny day.

While I'm doing this, guys shooting scoped rifles from the bench using 'lead sleds' and sand bags are patting themselves on the back for hitting steel at 100m and shooting larger groups at 100m than I am at 200m (220 yds). And these guys are going hunting?
There is one other guy in our club I see shooting from prone, and like me, he is ex-Army. I've made sure that when we do some revamping of our berms, there is a clear line of fire from one position on the firing line for prone shooters out to 500m. Otherwise, it would be a 'from the bench' or nothing proposition.

Three position shooting is all but a lost art. I'd love to get some interest in 200m off hand Schuetzen-style shooting with single shot rifles. Two classes: scoped and iron sights.
