Clays usually go into a final steep downward trajectory. How do you hit them when in their last 3 to 6 feet from the ground, at 35-45 yards? I have never got one this way yet. How much lead? Could I be using a choke, open or IC, that is too open for that distance?

At that distance you need full choke.....Trap shooters learn very quickly to break the bird before it starts to drop!!

I have shot targets at that distance with a skeet choke, just shoot 2 feet under them. I know it looks wierd.;)

When you pick up whole clay birds from the ground at any trap or skeet range you will find many with a hole or two that didn't break.....this is as a result of using a choke that is not tight enough....you can be right on the bird but loose it because it didn't get enough pellets and you will think its faulty shooting...and it will play with your brain....No, use full choke and you will breakem' if your on em'.

If it's a genuine IC pattern then it's possible holes in your pattern are showing up at beyond 35 yards. I might not use a full choke at that distance but would certainly go up to a modified particularly at 45 yards plus.

Hitting dropping targets requires practice. There is a tendency for shooters to not swing and just point below the target and pull the trigger. You need to keep the gun moving down.

A good game to play at the club if you have a free field is "closest to the ground." The shooter who hits the clays closest to the ground wins. It's good practice.
