What are your thoughts on some of the low noise .22 ammo? the CB short, CB long, and remingtons .22 LR CBee. I'm trying to decide for "around the house" hunting. I've got over 90 acres, plus wetlands, but squirrels and grackles are always eating the bird food or getting into sheds or eating stuff out of the garden. 2 of my niegbors dont like the noise, even though threre only hearing a little pop from where they live. my only other alternitive is a pellet gun, which i have been doing, but i want the quick follow up shots ( for multiple birds) and the extra power ( for when theyre past 20 feet).
any comments would be great. thanks

OK, I have the answer. Agulla make Colbri and Super Colbri. This is a 22 LR case, no powder and a 22 short bullet. Just the primer propoels the bullet.

Colbri was made for handguns. Not enough poop to get the bullet out of a rifle barrel.

Super Colbri has two scoops of primer. It makes a real bang in handguns and comes out of a 22 rifle ata round 500 fps (300 fps in a handgun).

I was so impressed with this Colbri Super I bought a case of 5000 rounds.

In a rifle it makes little noise. Sounds like a air rifle. Shoots a nickle sized group at 20 yards. Goes through both sides of a steel soup can.

The best feature is that youc an fill the magazine of your 22 rifle and shoot it like any other ammo. Of course, in a semi auto you would have to manually cycle the bolt.

When we have parties here at the farm we set up a range in the back yards. A table with 2 chairs to shoot from and a varairty of tin cans out about 20 ayrds. last party the range was going til midnight. Adults and kids of all ages and ###es love it. The low noise is a big feature.

One of my rifles won't feed the ammo (Marlin semi auto). 5 others work perfectly.

I gave some to a friend who has reported it kills squirls. I am sure it would kill birds to the limit of the accurate range.

I tested it over water and maximum range appears to be about 300 yards.

It is cheaper than 22 short, and much quieter.

If your rifle shoots the ammo well, go for it. I'm wondering about the noise level though. Is there any bylaws etc to do with shooting, etc, in your neck of the woods??

I guess what I'm getting at is, if no laws are being broken, who cares if the neighbors don't like the noise. Kanadahar is still free, right??:D

You are on ninety (90) acres? Invite them along. I was on five acres and shot dogs, cats, raccoons, and a couple deer. The only one who complained was the lady who's dogs I shot when they were after my chickens. 30-06, 6mm, 22, 222, and 12 guage. It is not as if you are doing drive by shootings.

It is nice that you are thinking of your neighbours but country life is live and let live. Garbage burning, dirt bikes, large loud parties and firearms being used. I try not to overdo it with my guns but the 17M2 is in use most days and a fair amount of .22, .223 and 12 gauge. I have used CB's and they are much quieter that regular .22's. If they want real peace I think that the only place for that is the cemetery. As long as there is no bylaw against shooting I think you should shoot what needs shooting.

I use the CB shorts in my Browning BL-22 lever when out on a friends acreage where noise is a bylaw (not the gopher hunting part). Great ammo and it is quieter than the 'pfft' from my pellet rifle. The loudest thing about it is the click of the hammer. I've shot gophers with it out to 25 yards, but that may have been lucky shots.....it's def not high velocity ammo. It won't cycle a semi, but in levers it seems to work great.

having 90 acres I wouldn't worry about noise level. Lo noise = lo velocity and light bullet= no damage + a lot of trajectory. Forget it. If you are hunting you need decent 22 ammo that shoot well and fly straight and flat. All those options you mentioned have over a foot of trajectory at 30 yards - it is lunacy trying to shoot anything with that much trajectory.

You only need about 400m from nearest building that does not belong to you. If you realy need to muffle the shot - use your imagination, even chunk of hose on the mizzle end will do.

I use cb shorts with great sucess in a Marlin 80 (they feed great). I've only got 5 acres but if I had 90 acres like you I'd likely tell my neighbours to mind their own business and use something bigger.

I was in a similar situation on my parents farm. About 100 acres. The closest neighbour was about 1km away. I would dispatch a varmint with a shotgun and he'd freak out on me saying," it was too loud". So i switched up to my to 22 subsonic ammo in my 10/22. I walked up to the neighbours house and had my dad fire off some rds. I could barely make out a pop. If i didn't like the neighbour i'd use a 60mm HE motor.

I would tell your neighbor to piss off, unless she had nice jooblies. Seriously though, I've only shot CB Longs when trying quiet ammo and if you are out in the open you only hear the hammer strike. I have a Condor .22cal air rifle and if I adjust the FPS below 1100, it's pretty quiet. I usually keep it around 1000-1050FPS and I've shot gophers at 50-75 yards. CZ and a few others make some really nice PCP rifles now. You can even get repeaters.

If you realy need to muffle the shot - use your imagination, even chunk of hose on the mizzle end will do.

I need to ask...how effective is it and do you have any tips? I may be trying 20M from my garage and am curious.

KDX, this isn't very welcomed topic since any attempt to reduce muzzle report is criminal in Canada. All I can say is that knowing the theory one doesn't need any kind of device - lots of handy domestic things work just fine. Using way underpowered rounds like CB's is not the way to do it thats for sure, you may as well use a slingshot.

That is also my combination for barnyard pest control as well.

Thanks guys, thats great. i really only want them for in the front yard, and the fenceline close to my other neigbor. most of them are fine with it, but theres 2 real b***$ who will yell at you if you run over a mouse.I just dont want the police over because i had some sort of "great big dangerous gun".

you'll think im crazy, but Im actually a member of PETA
