another tip: i've noticed that the longer the barrel, the less the report. even 1 1/2" makes a difference on virtually the same gun. i have two 10/22s, one with a 20" barrel, and one with a 18 1/2" barrel. the 20" barrel has noticably less "crack" when fired.

if you find that your 10/22 isn't reliable with sub sonic ammo, polish up the internals, it will help. if still no go, put a larger raduis on the rear of the bolt where is contacts the hammer.

I still maintain that CB's trajectory makes it almost impossible to use at random ranges anywhere past 15 yards. There is just no way to compresate for bullet drop and estimate distances withing 1 yard.

geez your neighbours must be sensitive to any noise at all if they dont like the sound a .22 being shot espeically since you have 90 acres? im surprised they cant even hear a pop (depening on where on your property your shooting)....

I've never range-tested the CB's at any great distance, though...I'll definitely put it on my to-do list...

Low Noise ammo

What are your thoughts on some of the low noise .22 ammo? the CB short, CB long, and remingtons .22 LR CBee. I'm trying to decide for "around the house" hunting. I've got over 90 acres, plus wetlands, but squirrels and grackles are always eating the bird food or getting into sheds or eating stuff out of the garden. 2 of my niegbors dont like the noise, even though threre only hearing a little pop from where they live. my only other alternitive is a pellet gun, which i have been doing, but i want the quick follow up shots ( for multiple birds) and the extra power ( for when theyre past 20 feet).
any comments would be great. thanks

After about three million years of human evolution you are saying the only way you can think of to control squirrels etc. is by killing them? Besides aren't they protected by law? Perhaps you could come up with a new definition of nuisance. Change your perception and you will change your world.

As far a ammo goes I am using both the CB's as well as Eley Subsonic Solid. They all work fine within a range and provide solid shooting pleasure.

As far as your neighbors are concerned I suppose they are as quiet a mice and don't use chain saws, hammers, mauls, tractors, trucks, ATV's, motor bikes or what have you? All these, and including occasional shooting, are normal for a rural soundscape.
Tell them it is a poor man indeed whose pleasures depend on the permission of others.

I was at the range yesterday checking my zero on a Marlin papoose(16 inch barrel) with a red dot mounted on top and cb longs.
I want to use it for grouse.
I was hitting golf balls about 75% of the time at 50 yards aimpoint right on the dot and at 15-25 yards I was aiming with the dot right under where I wanted to hit.
I didn't try shooting paper at the different ranges so I'm not sure what the drop is but I'm comfortable with this setup out to 50 yards for grouse, and I will probably only have to shoot at around 25 yards max.
