Looks longer than 7.62x51 to me.....sure it's an MG-3? I'd lean towards an old MG-42 in 8mm myself....

Yup, if he's fuzzy(?) on the concept of a barrel he probably isn't to sh*t hot on the idea of calibre either - you've gotta love the third (fourth?) world........well actually no you don't.

Yeah, its a funny photo, but I'll be those guys are aware the barrel is missing and are probably good at killing unarmed civilians. I've no idea who they are, my first guess is Janjaweed, but probably wrong, they dont look arabic enough. Either way, looking at that photo I suspect they know how to change a MG42 barrel, and are proficient with the weapon. I would not want to go up aginst them.

I'm not 100% sure, I just looked at the booster/flash hider and assumed it was an MG3.
