Thoughts on 1911s

Same here,
I have very little handgun experience, all together bit over a year.
When I started shooting, it was Springfield 1911 and SW686, follow by XD9, which help me to get my BB.
My interest with 1911 wasn't there. I like the look of XD9, and shooting wasn't bad. It wasn't till I learn how to use 1911, now, it is the best pistol, ever. I add to my collection STI Edge and I love that type of action.

Now I am looking for nice DA/SA pistol. Lots of guys tell me..you can't go wrong with Sig, so maybe, just to now, how is the grass on the other side....

Yes heard of Ruger but not of the P90 in .45, my mistake. It looks like a nice .45 but don't bite my head off. I was just lookin in the P90 thread in the black rifle forum so thats where my head was.

whatever works for you is the best gun for you. it's as simple as that. 1911's don't fit my hand, and I have a distinct issue with manual safeties on guns. I think they are superfluous, redundant and unnecessary.
I don't mind 757Fixer's Edge in .40, and will likely buy one, one day, just to round out the vault, but it's certainly not something I'm in a hurry to get. I also hate the grip safeties as my grip doesn't work with them at all. So that'll be pinned right off the bat (like the above mentioned Edge is).

How do 1911s stack up against a P90 same cal?

I'll qualify my post by stating that there are lots of Ruger centerfire pistol lovers on the site here who have nothing but admiration for their pistols. And I'm sure Ruger makes some good stuff. I know I have high regard for their .22 semi-autos...

Anyway, I had what perhaps may have been the first Ruger P90 .45ACP that came into Canada. It must've been a lemon. What a jamma-matic! Spoiled me from center-fire Ruger semi-autos ever since, though.

So, there's my .02 with real life experience. For me the P90 doesn't stack up against a nice 1911 at all!

I love the history and the overall characteristics of the 1911 but unless they are put together by someone who really knows what they're doing I'd rather put my trust into newer designs.

I have shot 1911's on and off for a few years now. More off than on.
I have never owned a 1911, and it is safe to say, probably never will.
That said, with the possible exeption of Rugers P345 (which I have never held, let alone shot), I also never had a burning desire to own anything (maybe a Marlin Camp Carbine) in .45 auto.
All that changed yesterday. At a shoot to introduce scottie_ to as many handguns as possible, to help him make an informed buying decision, I fired cocked&locked's XD45. I love it! Fits my hand perfectly, and felt recoil is not near what I've experienced with any 1911.
Yet another gun on my wish list!

I own a fair assortment of semi auto handguns including two Colt GoldCups.

Recentlty I aquired a CZ85 Combat. It's a fine gun & I am enjoying fine tuning & developing loads that will maximize this guns potential.

However, I have frequently dallied with other designs & a makes of guns but all things considered I believe the 1911 design works best for me.

Well in my opinion the 1911 is, was, and probably will always be the best handgun ever developed. I have been shooting now for 50 years and I can't think of a caliber or design that I haven't tried (or at least picked up) at least once. The 1911 demands that you practice with it to be good and I see nothing wrong with that, safety wise, I have no problem with it and in doing the job it was designed to do it has no equal.
