I've seen this stuff advertised in a few catalogues and on some websites. I was just wondering what people thought of this stuff. What advantages if any does it have over regular .22 ammo?

makes small holes in drywall insteal of one large one. Only thing I have seen it used for is shooting birds inside community halls in small towns before those weddings that need blood tests to make sure the offspring are not scousins. ;)

Works if you are close.

No scousins that I am aware of ;)

None. It can be used for killing very small vermin at VERY close range. Actually its only "advantage" is that it has very limited range and penetrating power. At one time there was a form of trap shooting using smoothbored .22s.

Shot shells fired out of rifled barrels have big holes in the resulting pattern. It's caused by the shot string flying in a spiral. They're worse than useless.

I shot some pigeons with them one time using my single shot cooey :)
It killed them if within 10 feet or so. The only real advantage to them is there is pretty much no worry about property damage

hum, i've shot a box but never were able to kill anything. You really have to be close.... 10f would be as far as it would go...

May I suggest cb longs, they fly at about 700 fps and 30gr if i'm not mistaken and make about the same noise as an air rifle. Much more effective, wouln't use them inside though, unless its in a barn or something.

As previously mentioned, the big problem is the rifling causes the shot to spray and you end up with a HUGE pattern at close range. If you fired them from a smoothbore they might be slightly useful. Back when I was a kid I remember shooting frogs, dicky birds etc, from very close range, don't think I ever managed to kill anything.

They may be more effective if you disassemble the round and throw the shot overhand at your target.

I tried some of this stuff back in high school... It didn't even take the bark off trees at VERY close range... You had to stick the barrel right next to the tree to see it make any kind of mark on the bark!!!

Don't waste your $ Jeremy!!!

Cheers

I usually have a box in my ammo bag to take care of pigeons at the range. They like to nest in the rafters and crap on everything :( . Low noise, very little property damage but you have to be close. For birds in the nest or mice/rats they're OK.
You have to realize its very light shot, backed up with very little powder. You're not gonna shoot competition trap with this.

I bought some the other day just because they were in the showcase and I wanted to see what they could achieve, if anything. After reading this thread, I remembered that I had a box of them in the safe so I went outside and shot a pizza box from yesterday @ 5 feet. The coin in the picture is a quarter. The shot went through both sides of the box and into a magazine I had behind it, looks like most went 20 pages deep and the wad was stuck inside the pizza box.
