thoughts on a first pistol?

Buying the pistol is the cheapest part... feeding it will cost far more.

I'd pass on the tok as a first pistol. Yes, they're cheap, and though the surplus ammo is a little more now, it's still fairly inexpensive. As others have stated, it is feast or famine with surplus availability, and the most recent batch was almost twice as expensive as the last. Usually a dire harbinger...

I don't recommend it as they're hard to shoot well. They are a crude design, have poor sights, and even the best triggers leave much to be desired.

.45 and .357 are pricey unless you reload. I say 9mm is the way to go.

If you've big hands a Sig, Beretta, or Girsan (quality Beretta clone) will probably fill the bill.

I learned how to shoot a handgun with a Ruger. Once I could shoot, I moved on to bigger guns.

A 38 revolver would be a good choice. Has an excellent trigger and tends to be very accurate. You can't learn how to shoot with a spray gun.

I skipped page 2, so I apologize if I repeat something....

I love shooting a .22 pistol. Low cost to feed it, not abusive, and cheap to feed......

I'm 6'1" and about 220, not 6'8" with monster mitts like you, but a S&W 617 has some good heft to it.
