So I've had my eyes on a Remington r1 stainless GI model. Looks beautiful in my opinion. All my 1911 are all "enhanced or extensively worked on". Seeing as I spend 400-450 on my current 1911's and add a few hundred $ into "upgrading", I thought I'd buy somthing a step up from that for once. I'm set on a stainless "GI" style. Series 70 or 80 Dosent matter to me. I'd love to buy another SAM in stainless but I haven't seen any GI styles. Only other one I can thing of is a Springfield. My budget for this will be under 1000$ Preferably. If there are any other options I'm forgetting please let me know. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't mind working on a 80 pistol for trigger work, expand my knowledge a bit. Anyone have experience with the Remington or springer? Thoughts on them? Honestly I'd love to practice as much as I possibly can on trigger jobs especially, I'm getting better and better. Worked on 5 1911's so far and I'm learning more and more. Long term goal is to be knowledgeable as possible and take in work for trigger jobs. I can't wait untill that day.

Sorry for the rant at the end, this is realy becoming a serious passion for me. But the original question is your thoughts on either a Remington or springer GI style. Thanks in advance!!

I really like my Rem R1. It's got a few tweaks (lowered, flared ejection port) but still retains the classic good looks of a GI Model. I think it's a pretty good value. I'll probably add one of their enhanced models to my collection at some point in the future.

RIA sells a nickle plated GI type that is pretty pimp....I almost pulled the trigger on one a few times but remembered how sucky GI are to shoot lol. Sights and beavertail leave a lot to be desired.

Sorry, but I'm totally not getting your logic. " All my 1911 are all "enhanced or extensively worked on". ; " Seeing as I spend 400-450 on my current 1911's and add a few hundred $ into "upgrading", I thought I'd buy somthing a step up from that for once. " < ---- Makes no sense. You can't get much more bottom of the bucket than a GI model. Garbage sights, crappy hammer + useless grip safety, practically mandate spending $ 200 + on upgrades right out of the box.

The main reason people buy GI's is to either keep them exactly as is ( they just like old school stuff ), or because they're the cheapest model to gut and rebuild with the exact, specific parts they want.

If you like SAM buy one of the enhanced versions that has the high sweep beaver tail, rounded hammer, and other stuff already done. Then it's just a matter of buff and polish internals to your taste and you're done.

Or get a Smith, Sig, off of EE that has low mileage if you want higher grade than SAM. Pretty much nothing to do other than clean them, and then polish/buff the exact things you want according to your personal

taste. Seems like a smoother route than trying to play around with GI.

Otherwise you need to rephrase your question a bit, I want to do a full build on a 1911, what's the best value base gun to start with.

The Rem has a decent set of sights installed.

Sorry MTLGUN, what I was trying to say is that I "don't" want to have to do anything to it. I want to buy it and leave it as is. I just want a nice simple stainless/nickel/chrome GI model to add to the collection.

I think SAM makes what you are after.

Ruger SR1911. I love mine.

Looks good with the low-glare stainless finish. Goes bang every time and puts rounds on target. It's a solid, enjoyable firearm right out of the box. I have absolutely no desire to change mine in any way.

Thing is it has to be a GI style, the sr is like the other 1911's I have.

Have you considered the STI GI model? In my experience, Texas-made STI's (basically, everything other than the Spartan) are a step above just about any other 1911 in their price range in terms of quality and fit-and-finish.

If you want a low cost, true "GI style" 1911, there are a few options. Rock Island, Auto Ordnance, Springfield and probably a few others have all made a pistol that fills that niche and looks the part. Some of the details are slightly more modern, but they are reasonable facsimiles. If it has to be nickel or stainless, the options narrow. I have two Rock Islands with nickel finish, they are both good guns. Springfield also made their GI model in stainless, but you are most likely limited to buying used as the GI line was discontinued a couple years ago. They do come up for sale once in a while, I recently bought a minty parkerized Springfield for 600 and that seems to be a fairly regular price. You may pay slightly more for a stainless one, but even base model Springfields are excellent pistols.

Just my opinion of course.
