Thoughts on a Vanguard in .257 Wby?

Warning : Weatherby Vanguard
Do not use this model until the company performs a safety upgrade to the bolt. The rifle can accidently discharge without the bolt being fully engaged.
PM me your serial # if you would like me to check if its in the effected serial number ranges.
( Info from page 1198 of 2003 Standard Catalog of Firearms 13th Edition)

BTW,,, they took care of that in early 2004. The Vanguards out there now have the corrected bolt. Buy away.

Cheers

I was pondering the 257 in the vangaurd as well.Almost bought it but p&d didn't have one in stock, neither did wholesale.P&D did have the 25-06 in the stevens and I bought that.Saved enough to buy dies, brass, powder, and bullets.Topped it with a nice leupold and was all set.Vangaurd is nice but I will say the little stevens can shoot!!!Good coyote, deer rig for me.Did not like the grey stock so I repainted it as well.fifteen bucks and got a custom gun.

257 Weatherby with a 24" tube will work just fine.My son a cutom built on a Savage 110 in L.H. with a 24" barrel and I have one on a Mark X action and a 27" barrel there is only 75 FPS diff in the two.His will do and honest 3650 with 100 Nozler Partions.I use Norma 204 in his and Reloader 22 in mine.I is a very flat shooting cartrige. And i have not seen a Vangaurd that will not shoot exceptionly good.

What kind of pelt damage do you think I'd end up with on a fox or coyote? Is there a particular load combination that might minimize this a bit. I'm a bit afraid of blowing a hole in them, although I want the pelts for myself not for sale.

What are the velocity differences when you shoot the same ammo out of each rifle?

Waste of time buying a 257 WTHBY unless you get a 26 inch tube... if your going to shoot a 24 inch barrel you might just as well buy a 25-06... the difference is negligable with 24 inch barrels.

I had a 25-06 and it still falls 200fps short of the Weatherby with a 24" tube, according to tests done by Speer and Lyman you will only lose about 30 to 35 fps for each inch of barrel.Going by the 2 that I load for its just about right on the money.

Buy a MK V in a .300 WBY Mag, use 150 gr Partitions and you'll get 3600 fps with identical holes on both sides of your wolf, around .310":D .

257

I just bought a 257 in the vanguard once i got rid of the creep in the trigger it was great it is very accurate with all weight of bullets but it could use a 26" barrell that would be ideal but the vanguard is a good shooter?

NOT pelt friendly at all. I shoot a Sako L61R with a 26" barrel and load Chinchaga 113gr plastic tips. 7 one shot dead deer this year:D
As for coyotes, if you shoot them running away (up the hoop) damage is minimal;)

What are "Chinchaga" bullets and where do you get them? Do they have a web site? I looked but couldn't find one.

Give Ultra-mag a shout, he is a dealer for them. They are built in Alberta, J4 jackets, they are darn good, ballisticly like Nosler. I shoot them in 4 cals now and love them. 243, 257, 284, 308.
