Love these threads a mix of good information and insider jokes from cgn.
Although, the more of these we get, the less serious the answers become.
Standard answers must include firing into space and is it chrome lined?
I feel safe with anything 30-06 or equivalent or better. I’ve never had to shoot one before, but had occasion to fire a warning shot a couple times with the same bear. On the first day, the bear shrugged off the warning shot and slowly sauntered away, but on the second day, the shot just over his shoulders sent him packing real quick.
But ... as another poster said, the gun in hand is the gun you need. I had almost been run down by an aggressive bull (cattle) once while deer hunting and a couple loud yells turned it back, but at one point I loaded the 303 British in my hand just in case. I was glad not to have a pointy stick that time .... thankfully, it did turn back before it got ugly.

By shot placement, that means shooting your buddy in the leg, gives you lots of time to retreat!
Whatever rifle your hunting partner has. If you get hammered you probably didn't have time to use yours anyway. I'd forget about shotguns. Dispatching many bears has taught me that those slow moving slugs are nothing but pathetic.

This is my ultimate bear defense rifle shortened to 21" barreled Rem 700 LSS in 375RUM.
I only use the Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40mm B&C reticle scope on it now load 260gr Accubonds @ 3020fps for hunting I shoot out to 500 yards with this combo.
When the scope is off I install my rear XS Sights backup Weaver ghost ring sight and load 350gr TTSX - Woodleighs at 2450fps it cuts cloverleaf 50 yard groups.
