Thoughts on bolt actions?

Everyone needs a 223, esp for plinking. A T3 is a good place to start. I really like my Savage Model 11. Cheap and nasty and very accurate.
That's very solid.

For taking game, the same or a Weatherby Vanguard (on the cheaper end, when they are on special). Great guns and great value. 6.5 CM, 7mm-08, 308 win, 270 Win, 30-06.

All more alike than different. Lots of good options.

You can get yourself a savage axis with a scope for $425ish after rebate. Maybe less as the rebate is USD. I think I’m going to go in to town tomorrow and pick one up in .223.. I swore never again but…. I’m cheap lol

223 there are so many options for factory rifles and packages, you may have to narrow it down a bit to your preferences.
Do you want light weight sporter barrel type rifle, or something with a heavy barrel? Do you want a 26" heavy barrel or a 16" heavy barrel or something in between? Want decent mags, proprietary mags, hinged floor plate, or blind mag? Want a short action, long action, or mini action?
Seriously, options are kind of endless.
If you want to carry it around, smallest lightest would be better IMHO.

How do you find savage? I’ve heard they’re cheaper but what do you think as far as quality and feel?

I’d like something shorter and light weight, and I’m going back and forth between 223 and 308. I don’t know a ton about mags but I’d like something detachable. I’m almost thinking something like the Sig Cross right now but cheaper (if something like that exists). Thanks for the feedback!

The Howa mini action, sporter barrel profile, not a bad lighter set up for the price, rifle is made in Japan, quality and action/bolt design is excellent, plastic trigger guard/mag housing is the only negative, mags are proprietary and expensive and not high quality, but they work fine.
Ruger American Ranch is also OK, little rough on the finish, takes AR15 mags which are cheap and everywhere and work good, same price range ballpark.
If they were still being made, CZ527 checks all the boxes, quality everything, sadly they dropped the line a few years ago to make CZ600 which kinda blows

You get what you pay for I guess. They’re cheap, they’re ugly, the bolt isn’t smooth like butter. this would be a rifle I’d let new shooters try out. There’s a few guys here that say their axis out of the box are deadly shooters.. the quality and the feel are the reasons I hate them.

I’d have to agree with hitzy about the cz 527, that’s what I run for a .223.. if you can find one for around $800 like I did, BUY IT. Mags are expensive And they don’t offer PMAGs for it..

There's more to the Savage line-up than the Axis line.

I've got a Mossberg .223 bolt. The little one with firesght up front and an A2 birdcage.

I bought it because of tge Blackface bans and the fact that it uses STANAG magazines.

I've put a little Redfield 2x7 on it on low rings.

It's very light and handy.

Hey everyone, I’m looking into getting a bolt action for under 1500 or so (with scope), does anyone have any suggestions and preferences? I’d want it to be fine going out about 400 yards but that’s probably the farthest I’d need, maybe 500. Any thoughts? Thanks!

At that price with a decent scope, used Husqvarna. $600 for the rifle, $800 for the scope, $100 left for a pepsi and a box of ammo.

I personally shoot 6.5 x 55, the one that the Creedmore really tries to be but doesn't quite measure up to. Ammo is not easy to find everywhere so I reload.

Ammo is plentiful for .223, 6.5 Creed, .308, and the old classic .22-250 is still quite popular. All will reach out as far as you want to go.

Guys looking for a 223, maybe 308, not a HVA 1600 or Mauser 98 answer lol
How do you know exactly what the guy wants? A smart shooter explores all options.

Right now Intersurplus has a great selection of .308 rifles, many of them better quality than you can buy new for half the money.
Mauser 98 based rifle from interarms, spend rest of budget on optics and ammo?
a .308 would fit the bill for the OP and Intersurplus as got more than a few available presently: https://intersurplus.com/collections/308-winchester

Vangards are good rifles; built by Howa in Japan.
