thoughts on Henry Mare's Leg .22?

Hi everyone,

I've been considering picking up a Henry Mare's Leg in .22 for a while now. There was one on the EE for a bit for a decent price but I hummed and hawed for too long and missed out. I see now that Frontier Firearms has them on sale so the itch has returned.

Anyway, I know some folks don't think these are overly practical but man do they look like fun. They seem to get pretty good reviews around the Web, sounds like the quality is pretty good and they're not picky with ammo. I'm interested to hear any of your experiences with them.

I love mine. I would suggest ordering a full size stock though. Still keeps the rifle very short, while making it easier to aim. The only issue I have had is the magazine tube has cracked near the loading side. Mind you I have had mine for 4 years, and I have not been gentle with it.
 
Had one. Liked it. Traded it. Was a bit sad after.

Bought a new one. Added a HiViz front sight, and a longer buttstock from the H001Y model.

Will never sell or trade again. Henry leverguns are slick, smooth and beautiful!
(and an absolute treat to shoot with the improved sight and useable stock)
 
Funny story, I had that front post for a bit then gave it to a friend. With such a short barrel I found the "dot" from fiber optic to large. I am thinking maybe peep sights, or putting a compact rim fire scope on the little guy.
 
You'll find the Henry action is VERY tolerant of a wide variety of ammo. Mine sees regular use at my club's Jr .22 program. And with the recent ammo shortages we've had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for quality. Stuff which was causing nasty headaches with the club's single shot Savages and a few other rifles that the other guy and I brought in was passing through my Henry without a care.

Now how it SHOT for groups was another thing. But the odd time I would get to try my own rifle it still seemed to be me as the limit and not the rifle and ammo even with the worst of it.

The other gun with the non fussy diet was my Ruger 10-22. The two of them were sort of like Mikey from the old time TV add. Those two guns will eat ANYTHING.... :d
