thoughts on Ithaca 500

Im thinking about getting an Ithaca 500, and i would like to know peoples opinions on the firearm. Thanks

While I don't own one I was thinking of getting one awhile back but didn't--don't know why. The 500 was made by SKB and imported by Ithaca. I think they were made roughly from 1968-1980. From everything I have heard they were pretty good guns. I have an SKB XL900 automatic from 1977 and it has been a very good gun.

SKB model 500 is an excellent O/U shotgun. Get that quickly if the price is right and the firearm is in sound condition overall and more particularly if that is a 20ga.

Check to fully ensure that the stock and fore end has no cracks anyplace.

I have one of these in 20 Gauge. I've never personally owned an O/U before. Was once extremely biased for SxS shotguns. That changed after I bought/used this SKB Ithaca. Although I still respect a good SxS.

This past fall several bunnies and a few grouse fell to this great handling little O/U.

I would say $500.00 give or take depending on condition.

I have noted that condition decription usually vary from individual to individual. However, IMHO, a 12ga specimen in NRA Exc condition should fetch somewhere in the range of $675-$700.....add 20% on top if 20ga.

Yes, area and condition means a lot (and how bad one wants it). Checking the current auction sites, I see a trap model listed at $489.00 which the seller lists at 98% condition (although I doubt it). It hasn't sold yet. I see another listed at $599.00 that also isn't sold and I see another that was supposedly unfired in box that sold for $788.00. So I would say a typical condition gun should be between $500-$600.00 dollars. But again, it all depends on how bad you want it compared to what asking price is.

They are one of the "sleeper" great values in the used gun market. Stephen Bodio in his book "Good Guns" has high praise for them. I owned one once, sold it to a good friend. It was well built, well balanced, and trim. Mine was a 20 ga, in NRA VG condition. I bought it a few years ago for $800.

I owned a 600 Skeet and 2 500's in 12 & 20 back in the late 60's/early 70's ... satisfied with all of them. Reliable and well made.

In good condition, $ 750-ish for a 12, $ 900+ for a 20.
