I have a Leupold FX-II Scout IER 2.5x28mm scope on my stainless laminate BLR Takedown .358 and downed a Moose at about 200 meters with it using a 310gr Woodleigh bullet at 2100 fps MV. No issues.
Thoughts on optics for a 358 win

My Dad had an old Banner or Scopechief (I forget which) 1.5-4.5 for years and years, never let him down on a 660 Rem in 350 Mag. They're a nice, compact straight tube optic, and you still see the odd NIB Japanese-made ones around. tradex had some, and someone on EE was selling some a while back.
I just picked up my new/old scope for my 358 . It's an older M8 Leopold fixed 4 that Korth went over for me . It's not as versatile as a variable , I know , but I do like the M8 series . In all the years that I've used them , they've never let me down . They're just a simple , uncomplicated little scope . The fixed four will do anything I need to do , but YMMV .

I picked up a couple of these new and are surprisingly clear and bright. Made in the '70s according to the literature in the box. I have one on my Mini-14 and on my shotgun.

Yep, that was me... I sold over 50 with not one complaint, still have 4 nib and a few mounted on various rifles and muzzleloaders.

I'm the same way with my 325 model 70 EW. It'll do everything I want. But they're all just so shiney. The sickness that nobody wants the cure for.

The VX2 in 2-7 sounds like a good choice to me too. Have one on a 25-06 CDL.
The other VX2's I have ( 3 of them) are 1-4's which I actually prefer. Small, compact, great field of view and adequate for the under 100 yard shooting I do.
All are mounted in Leupold super low QD mounts.

I put a 2-7x33 Redfield on mine and it seems to be a good combo,...but I think I may upgrade to a Leupold VX2,..but I will be staying with 2-7x33...Leupold also has a new VX3i line of scopes that are designed towards low light conditions,...from what I have read about them they seem to be an excellent scope...you might want to check them out..I plan to put one on my X-Bolt before next fall.

why changing that scope? redfield is a leupold ....
I have two 358's one has a 2-7x33 Leupold and the other is a 1.5-5 Leupold, It makes a big difference where you hunt, at the higher magnification
the 5 power gives up a little power but it can easily put a bullet precisely into a deer out to 300 yards if need be but where the smaller Leupold excels
is when you are still hunting in thick woods, you will really appreciate the wide field of view.
