Thoughts on optics for a 358 win

why changing that scope? redfield is a leupold ....

Hey medvedqc,...you're right, Redfield is Leupold,..some say the Redfield is equivalent to the VX1,..others say it is equivalent to the Rifleman,... the main reason I am changing scopes is I need a scope to put on a Marlin 336 35rem that I bought for my son,..so I figured I would put the Redfield on the Marlin and up grade a little to the VX2 on the Browning,..the gold ring on the Leupold will match the gold trigger and Buckmark on the Browning, lol, ....I'm thinking it may be a bit brighter in low light of dawn and dusk.

The VX-3 2.5-8 has a 36mm objective.

It is a good choice for your BLR.

Damn brain fart there. Can't even blame autocotrect haha. Snagged it off the EE for a fairly decent buy I like to think. I may put on on something else and try and find a 1.5 to 5 bevause i like the thought of using a scout rail as someone previous showed.

I've also decided to slowly weed out all my gloss scopes.

your eyes will tell you but if you need a new scope that is a different story ...

I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 2-7x32 mounted on my pre-81 BLR in 358 Win. The Famae above it is also a 358 Win but wears a Leupold Vari-X III in 1.5-5x20 format. Due to range limitations of most 358 Win loads theres no need to go with much more magnification. Even the lowly 5x will allow accurate shot placement out to 400yds which is about maximum range one can expect reliable bullet expansion when launched from the 358 Win. Keep in mind that the BLR stock have stock drop designed for optimal use of the open sights. Mounting the optics as low as possible will help maintain proper cheek weld...and even at their lowest it's borderline acceptable!

I have a Leupold FX-II Scout IER 2.5x28mm scope on my stainless laminate BLR Takedown .358 and downed a Moose at about 200 meters with it using a 310gr Woodleigh bullet at 2100 fps MV. No issues.

That's an awesome rifle Slam !! Love the pepper laminate !
....I wouldn't suspect there's any accuracy issues at all where it's a TD model. Thought about one of those a while back.. a blued version, but the more I see the 358's the more I want one.

...LOL....it's a damn sickness it is !!

Thanks! Since the scope is on the barrel there are no re-zeroing issues after taking it down and re-assembling it. The BLR trigger takes some time to get used to, sort of like a 2 stage pull, but with enough practice it's capable of decent accuracy.

Fine rifle and round, I could do away with all my other rifles and use this one for everything (but what fun would that be?).

Ha ha...I hear ya man. Beware of the man that owns only one gun...lol (my FIL used to say that...RIP Fred)

Slam....Would it be possible to swap out another barrel in the same action length (( for same bolt face set up...ie...243...308...7mm08 )) ??....you really got my old grey matter turning now !!
.....frig on you and those nice pics !!!......hah hah hah

Never occurred to me that my 358 takedown BLR could be a switch-barrel rifle because I'm so smitten with the round so why consider any other? ;)

Should be possible but I think the new barrels would have to be fitted properly to the receiver.

Hi There, what is the smaller optic in the photograph, and what can you tell me about it?

Thanks,

The top rifle is a .308, the optic is a Tasco ProPoint PDP3 red dot... an inexpensive but fairly hardy unit... variable light intensity, multi-point reticle options... I hate red dots... but it was installed for my father for deer hunting, he never takes a shot over 100 yards, and his eyesight is not good.

Thanks for that. For my BLR .358, I am leaning towards the Leupold VX-3 family, or also if one of you could recommend a "scout" forward mount style in a similar magnification.

If you had your "rathers", which of the following 3 would you pick for a BLR .358 Win, and why?
